Home Repairs/HoneyDo List/Advice & Tips/etc.

All 5 wires are white unfortunately. The picture casts a shadow over one of the wires to look like it is black. I'll pick up a voltage tester, as I only have an outlet tester. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!

Well, I've finally got the wiring fixed in the bathroom. My father in law came over with a voltage meter, we found the hots, and then the only question was how to connect the two switches together. After about an hour, we figured it out.

Thanks for your help DW. Appreciate it!

Changed all 4 outside to inside door locks today

I ripped out our nasty basement shower (it had a teal insert) last weekend. I cleaned the shower pan this morning, now ready to put up vapor barrier, cement board, tile, then grout and we'll have another functioning bathroom

I replaced some switches and receptacles in one of the bathrooms today, found some interesting things.

1- There is a 2 gang box that holds switches for the bathroom light on one side and the fan/shower light on the other side. They are on different circuits. Annoying.

B- Not one of the breakers in the panel controls what it says it controls.

3-I have Three 2pole breakers for "hot water heater" (pet peeve, if it's already hot why do you need a heater- it's either a hot water tank or a water heater). The house has 2 water heaters, so I guess I could see having 2 breakers...but the water heaters are gas. Pretty sure gas water heaters don't take 30 amp breakers. I have yet to figure out what, if anything, those breakers control.

4-One of the kitchen lights and the downstairs hallway light share a 2 gang box and are on different circuits. Annoying again.

F-The breaker for the Freezer (I don't have a stand alone freezer, that's just what it was labeled) controls power to the furnace. The furnace is obviously not in a relocated position- it (or it's predecessor) was put there when the house was built. Who mistakes a furnace for a freezer?

Hey, I brought you some popsicles, where should I put them.
Stick them in the freezer down in the corner of the basement.
Uhhh...that's a furnace.
Really?

Ok the backwall of my kitchen is drywalled, taped and mudded.

I learned three things today:

1. Always always always look at a prospective house to see if the workmanship was good. Granted in this case everything fell apart 4 years after I bought it, so they covered it well.

2. Never assume that the genius did the home expansion/improvements understood the concepts of making a wall square, making windows within that wall even (as on the same level). There are two sets of windows on this back wall, and the asswipes had a 4-5 inch gap between them. The problem is, and I didn't realize it until today, the windows are on different levels by nearly 1/2 an inch :smash:

3. Measure 5 times, cut once, realize the wall isn't square, cut again, realize that the studs themselves vary in terms of depth within the wall, cut again to ensure it doesn't bind on the slightly lower set of windows.....

I can't wait until I move.

It's fixed now. Well except the windows being a tad bit uneven...that's a bit more than I'm willing to tackle. You only notice it if you have a flat edge near it so you can differentiate the levels anyway.

What an extremely long day and it isn't over. I am currently taking a break from cataloging the contents of my basement that got wet from my water softener springing a gigantic leak. My daughter (who should have been in bed) went downstairs at 11 last night and started yelling about water being all over. Their was only about 4 inches of water all over the place. Couldn't call State Farm until 9 this morning. I call them and have Servicemaster come out to estimate the damage clean up. Then call a plumber to cut the softener out of the loop. So now I get to catalog multiple items even down to the last Christmas decoration. I have been told to log everything. Any water on it, log it. Washer, dryer, freezer, many pieces of furniture, 2 computers, etc. Carpet in finished side got extremely wet, drywall wet, framing wet, ugh.....

I pray the adjuster is a good one, and that we get alot of help to cover our 1000 dollar deductible. I would have rather gone to work today. Any advice going forward to help maximize my claim? Anything I can do to help my case? I just do not want any of this to come out of pocket. I hate this stuff.

Your TV (the most expensive one in the house) was in the basement at the time, right? As well as your stereo equipment, bicycles, etc. They said anything that got wet, right?

My friend joked with me that my tv that my son threw a football at a month ago was in the damage path... That's not a dent that's water damage... lol
