If someone can afford to go to Costa Rica and exploit their women and others they should certainly have the common courtesy of the leaving the poor country a fucking tip on the way out, jesus.

Oh, I had no problem with paying it but there are no signs or info. about it when you book your flight or in the airport that I recall.

People are mad about not knowing about having to pay it before they check-in at the airport.

I've flown out of a lot of places down there: Mexico a bunch, Honduras, guatamala, puerto Rico, el Salvador, uraguay, Argentina... I dont know, more.

I have never had an "exit tax." my guess is that they only try that with gringos who don't speak Spanish and whom they think they can take one over on.

Could have something to do with the duration of the stay. I had to spend a whole day running around Quito to get things signed/stamped just so I could come home. I was there for the better part of a year, though.

I'm also quite jealous that you've been to Argentina and Uruguay. Those are high on my list of places to visit.

If you had to run around and get official stamps, you must be right: it was more than just a grift.

Uruguay was great. I rented a motorcycle there, drove around, and drank mate. The people are very nice and welcomining.

The Argentinians are split between Buenos Aires and the rest of the country. I have spent the last two months dating one, but she grew up in Patagonia and went to school in Cordoba. It's been interesting having Spanish as the main language with her and her friends, although her English is quite good.

But yes, those, with Costa Rica, were my favorite countries down south. Of course I have never been to Bolivia and Ecuador, so I don't know yet.

Did you have any good Malbec while you were in La Argentina?

I'm sure Costa Rica attracts similar types as Ec/Peru. Lots of naturaleza, much less urban area, et cetera. The only thing I disliked was sticking out like a sore thumb. I felt like Gulliver down there, not too many people with Inca ancestry get to be over 5' 7'' or so, and I'm considerably larger than that.

I'd love to visit South America, it's on my to do list, especially Argentina and Chile. My father in-law (que en paz descanse) was an Italian but his father was from Argentina. Since I've been married we've spent all of our vacations in Europe and the east coast of the USA because that's where she's wanted to go and I'm such a pushover. My wife has this idea in her head that all countries south of the USA border are banana republics and she doesn't feel like she'd be safe in any of them.

I didn't go to Mendoza. I was visiting my cousin and his Colombian wife in Buenos Aires, and I didn't leave the area. The wine was fine there too, but it is so funny how they serve nothing but steaks at restaurants, and the occasional pizza. Not exactly diverse.

And I love sticking out. I do it on the subway everyday from Queens now. All the Mexicans (from south Mexico-- more native) and Asians move as I push through them. Some are like 4 feet tall. It's hilarious. . .
