A prayer circle was formed at the Hoban-St. V-M game after an injury to a player. Tenishia Benson, a senior and number 22, started the prayer at the game.

That it happened at all is amazing. That it happened during a game between two of the bitterest rivals in local high school sports is almost miraculous.

The bad blood between Archbishop Hoban and St. Vincent-St. Mary isn't quite on the order of Sunni vs. Shiite, but it is sufficiently intense that several years ago Hoban stopped scheduling St. V-M in several sports largely because of ugly incidents involving fans, players and coaches.

These days, the Lady Knight and Lady Irish basketball teams meet only in postseason tournaments, where the pairings are out of their hands. And that's what brought them together last week in a district semifinal game at Lake High School.

Nice story but it smacks of the whole born again thing. I really do not need anyone telling me that I need to stand up and say the lords prayer. Not saying that I wouldn't be doing it anyway if the kid was hurt, I probably would. I know I was when the PSU kid was hurt at the shoe. I just do not need to be pressured. But then again, I am a cynic.

    Guess I saw it different...

    1) this was a KID who went beyond herself to do what she thought could help another sportsmate.. despite being an arch rival... in a major tourney game no less.. beyond commendable
    2) we don't think anything negative when we see massive men in football uniforms do similar things on their field of battle for a fallen player .. in fact, we probably see that as classy

Not really, I see it as stupid and self-centered. Yeah all the pain in the world, and we should care about a minor injury on the field. Ohhh...torn ACL. Yeah, that really sucks compared to standing on a land mine. :roll1:

:slappy: Yes, empathy is self-centered... as opposed to denying any pain/sacrifice unless it is truly epic. :atom:

Somehow I doubt your toughguy routine finds its way to the hospital.

Acting like "god" cares about some meaningless game played in some god-forsaken gym is self-centered.

I guess, but when was the last time they asked or even more so demanded the crowd to stand up and say the big prayer? Never. I am betting that the kid gets lots of practice at church. If she want to that is great, and even earnest. Get the team together that is apropriate. But when she starts demanding it from the crowd it comes as self ritchous and frankly grandstanding. But then again, I am a bit cynical when it comes to religious pressure.

But if there were land mines on the gym floor, it wouldn't be forsaken. :tongue2:
