High school football player dies after collapsing at practice

By the Associated Press

PICKERINGTON | A high school football player collapsed after running sprints at conditioning practice in hot weather and died later at a hospital, the principal said Tuesday.

Officials at Pickerington Central High School did not know of any medical conditions that Kwame Afriyie had, Principal Chuck Kemper said.

Before the 16-year-old collapsed Monday, his legs were wobbly as he walked to a water table and complained he didn't feel well, Kemper said. He died later in the day at Children's Hospital in Columbus.

He earlier had lifted weights in practice at the school in suburban Columbus, Kemper said. The temperature was about 84 degrees Monday.

Children's Hospital was performing an autopsy Tuesday but would not release information, citing privacy concerns. The Franklin County coroner's office said the hospital did the autopsy because there was no reason to suspect anything but natural causes.

"We're hoping to learn something soon," Kemper said.

Afriyie, who was starting his sophomore year, was outgoing and also played basketball, Kemper said.

"He liked to stop and talk in the hallway," he said.

Football coaches met with counselors Monday night and told Afriyie's teammates about his death Tuesday morning.

The school is providing counselors for the students, Kemper said.

I hate seeing this stuff...

We've had passing league practice the last two nights and have a game tonight...its been 90+ with horrid humidity.

Just have to stay on them about hydration before, during, and after practice.

could you put that into laymans terms Tibs? What exactly happens with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?

I skimmed this site - it's accurate

Hank Gathers also died from this.

the main points are:
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is characterized by the abnormal growth of muscle fibers on the heart muscle, often causing a thickened septum. It is generally considered a genetic disease that affects about 0.2 percent of the population, or one in 500 people. Most hypertrophic cardiomyopathy shows no symptoms. However, if symptoms develop, they most often occur during puberty and late childhood.

Among patients who develop symptoms, most are mild to moderate and progress slowly with age. Among a small subset of patients, however, symptoms can be severe and life threatening. These patients are at increased risk for sudden cardiac death, stroke, heart block and infection of the heart muscle. According to the American Heart Association, 36 percent of young athletes who die suddenly have definite or probable hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Whether or not patients are experiencing symptoms, it is important to avoid isometric exercises such as weight lifting. Unless otherwise advised by a physician, aerobic exercises such as walking or even running can be safe as long as they are never engaged to the point of dehydration and/or exhaustion because this could trigger a potentially fatal abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia). Other strategies to maintain a normal heart rhythm include taking antiarrhythmic medications and the surgical insertion of a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator.
