Seems that Herschel Walker suffers from multiple personality disorder.

Ex-NFL star Herschel Walker reveals in upcoming book he has multiple personalities
January 18, 2008
ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia football great Herschel Walker has multiple personalities -- a revelation in an upcoming book that surprises the man who coached the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner.
"That's all news to me," former Georgia coach Vince Dooley said in Friday editions of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "All I know is whatever personality he had when he had the football was the one I liked."
"Breaking Free" will chronicle Walker's life with multiple personality disorder, according to Shida Carr, a publicist at Simon & Schuster.
Carr said the book will be published in August, but gave no other details and declined to provide excerpts.

So you're trying to tell me that his coach didn't realize that his star player had a personality disorder!

You ever meet anyone with confirmed multiple personality disorder?

It's actually dissociative identity disorder and it isn't as easy to spot as some might think.

I haven't but I have learned quite a bit about it. However my initial surprise (the second post was a joke :p) was more about the fact that it seems odd that a parent-figure wouldn't know about something that important. You'd think someone would have told him or something. If Beanie had dissociative identity disorder and Tressel had no idea, I think that'd be ridiculously strange.

Heh, I knew the second one was a joke.

It's something that the sufferers learn to hide. Even from parents or parental figures. If he had learned to deal with his everyday life, and football, without having episodes, he probably would have felt very strongly about not telling anyone. It has a lot of social stigma attached to it due to the sensationalization of the disorder when it wasn't well understood.

I would be interested in reading his book and finding out if it's something he shared with anyone at all.

Walker reveals struggles with mental disorder in just-released book

In the just-released book "Breaking Free", former NFL running back Herschel Walker delves into his excruciating struggles with dissociative identity disorder, saying he tried to manage a dozen alternate personalities and that the condition nearly drove him to suicide.

In a "Nightline" interview that will air Monday on ABC, the 46-year-old Walker said he has been in treatment for eight years and believes the disorder is under control, adding that writing the book was therapeutic for him.

"I've totally changed from back then to where I am today," he said. Details of the interview appear in a story on ABCNews.com. It is not clear at what point in his life Walker believes he had the disorder.

Herschel Walker reveals many sides of himself

Herschel Walker says he wrote about his dissociative identity disorder to dispel myths and help others.

WRIGHTSVILLE, Georgia (CNN) -- Many people think they know the legendary Herschel Walker: 1980 Heisman Trophy winner, pro football star, Olympian and last week in San Francisco, an Olympic torchbearer.
But not only did the public not know the real Herschel Walker, the athlete himself said he didn't either. In his just-released book "Breaking Free," Walker reveals he has a form of mental illness called dissociative identity disorder, or DID, formerly known as multiple personality disorder.
"I didn't really learn about this until about 10 years ago," Walker tells CNN. "My life was out of control. I was not happy, I was very sad, I was angry and I didn't understand why."
Walker said his life went off the tracks shortly after his football career ended and when his now ex-wife was expecting their son, Christian.
The book, he said, is about coming to terms with his diagnosis. He hopes to educate the public and break down stereotypes about this disorder.
When people hear of multiple personality disorder, they may think of Hollywood's portrayal -- someone with different "people" trapped inside one body, but that is not accurate.
Everyone has various facets that make up his or her personality -- assertive, angry, comforting. But, experts explain, in DID, these various parts -- known as alters -- don't come together as one cohesive single personality. Instead, one or the other part of the identity takes over and determines one's behavior.

Herschel Walker to return Dec. 4

Herschel Walker earned a third-round stoppage in his pro debut against Greg Nagy in January.

Herschel Walker will meet Scott Carson in a featured heavyweight bout at Strikeforce "Henderson vs. Babalu" on Dec. 4 at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, the promotion's CEO Scott Coker confirmed to ESPN.com on Friday.
The bout, which will air live on Showtime, will mark the 48-year-old Walker's second professional MMA bout. The 12-season NFL veteran made a successful debut in January and is possibly the sport's highest-profile novice.
"The goal with Herschel's next fight is to put him in a little more competitive environment and let him test his skills," Coker said of Walker's bout.
