Herniated Disc or Muscle Pull?

Wednesday I picked up a 55 gallon drum full of scrap metal (Didn't bend my knees. I know I'm a dumbass.) and did something to my back. Anyways Thursday I felt somewhat better so I went out and got drunk. Bad idea. Friday I could barely move. Saturday was better and it has continued to get better until this evening. My right lower back and hips are the spots that ache. But when moving I get sharp pains around my spine and through my hips and thighs. Never had a back problem before. Looking for any advice.

My advice would be to see an orthopaedic surgeon. Preferably one who specializes in back injuries and their diagnosis and treatment.

That, or get some Cherokee hair tampons from a holistic healer...

Seriously, the shooting pains in your thighs sounds like lumbar radiculopathy. I would not go to someone like a chiropractor until you saw some ortho. Problem is, he or she will want CTs or MRIs - or both. Sorry to hear that man.

Thanks Gator. From some articles I've read tonight sounds like I'll have to grin and bear it for the next few weeks.

P.S. How the fuck are you educated in so many areas. You're like the expert on everything. Thanks again.

I'd like to but no health insurance.

Workman's comp? I had damn near the same exact thing happen to me, but I was picking up a keg. Had a partially herniated disc in my lower back and pain from a pinched nerve. Took about a month for the workman's comp bs to get sorted out and for me to get a shot put in my back.

Hey - you can be wrong about everything or right about just a few things....I chose the former.

But you do see a few back injuries if you have a personal injury practice. :p

The shooting pains in the legs (instead of just localized pack pain) is usually a sign of a pinched nerve/herniation - and that symptom matches up with lumbar injury even if you had never mentioned your back. I know we have some docs on here, and they would know far better. But I would not try to brush it off and go back to work. You do not want to hurt yourself worse.

And if you do have a workers comp injury, in my state you have a right to go to the doc of your choice, and not the company doc they send you to. This can make a BIG difference down the road in whether you get treatment or surgery or comp if you cannot work. So I am not giving you advice, because I have no idea how you do things in your state, but if you have a comp issue, just be aware that your employer and its insurer treat it like you are the other party in a lawsuit. What is best for you and what is best for them is not the same thing. Make sure you know your options before you agree to use their doctors.

Just sayin'...

Bend your knees next time.

After I strained my back a few years ago, I had the worst pain I've ever had. It ended up being muscle spasms, which went away with muscle relaxant pills. If you're lucky, you might have the same thing.

Sounds like a muscle strain...if you had a slipped disc, pain most likely would radiate farther down the leg but it can happen with strains too. Depending on your age, most people have some degree of disc slippage without any noticeable problems.

Ibuprofen, heat, rest (off your feet, no strain on the back type rest - call off work if you have to). Repeat as necessary..if not better after a week, may have to go see somebody like others have said. If there is a free clinic nearby, that may be an option if insurance is an issue?

He spends a lot of time on the Internet fighting for the rights of Urban Meyer, Tim Tebow, and lawyers. He's probably picked this knowledge up in his many travels to other forums where people tell jokes.

OK, so Urban Meyer, Tim Tebow, and an attorney walk into a bar ...

It's like a bright Gatorubet beacon goes off in the night sky above his home.
