HELP ME APPLY TO OSU!!

spid3rmanggg;690580; said:
well im saying i probably will have a 3.2 by the time i apply..i am a minority. I am Asian-American(Korean).

SAT's...ughh..PSAT's i got a 1660. I'm taking the SAT's this coming month. January 27th. I am from out of state, and while some people tell me my GPA is decent and fine, others say it'll be hard with it.

I wanna make sure i get into main campus too.

Though i want to major in psychology right now i might want to change majors by the time i graduate high schoool..but for now thats my goal, and whatever major i really choose i really wanna go to OSU

Being a minority really helps but being black would have been more of a help but hey, if you scored that well on your PSAT's I think you'll be fine.

I believe OSU looks more at ACT's, do you have that scheduled as of yet?

Well I'm telling you, the big thing HERE is the ACT.

Just call someone in admissions and ask them.

i am not even a undergrad student of OSU yet. I am a junior at Upper Dublin High School in Phildelphia, Pennsylvania. I am highly interested in attending OSU, and i want to know how hard it really is to get in.

My GPA will probably be 3.2ishh when i apply..

what SAT score and GPA did you guys get to get in?

What's your class rank? That will also count. Have you taken AP classes? The average for last year's class was 87th percentile class rank and 26.4 ACT/1210 SAT. Applications are up 38% this year, so that average will probably take a noticable jump upwards.

With increased retention and grad rates, Ohio State is also enrolling smaller freshman classes, so the squeeze is coming from both directions: larger, better qualified applicant pool competing for fewer spots. With a 3.2, I'd guess that you're going to need roughly a 28 ACT/1250 SAT and be in the top 15% of your graduating class to ensure admission. If you're only halfway through your junior year, you still have this Spring and next Fall to bring the gpa up a few points. I don't know Ohio State's philosophy on out-of-state students (even though I was one) as to whether they make it more difficult (save spots for Ohioans) or less difficult (higher tuition $$) or don't differentiate.

wow that was a pretty thorough explanation. thanks you!

basically I know of the ACT's but have never considered them because the only thing we talk about here in philly is the SAT's..and now that its out of 2400 im pretty confused on how to compare it to the 1600 one. Basically all colleges are getting harder to get into. I'm just hoping i can get accepted. I will probably be a borderline acceptance if i do anyway. I'm aiming to hit a 1700+ SAT score and have a 3.2 GPA.

QUESTION: does the GPA that i send in the a college admission count only up to the end of junior year? does senior year really matter?

Use google and I'm sure that you can find a conversion table between the ACT and the SAT or the old and new SAT. Ohio State really doesn't care whether you submit an ACT or SAT. The ACT was traditionally the test used in the midwest, so that's why it is submitted more often.

No answer on when the gpa cutoff is. If you apply early in your senior year though, there's no chance that fist semester of sr. year could count. That's a question that the admissions department could quite easily answer.

It sounds like you're going to be a borderline admit, so I'd have some backup schools in mind (like Miami of Ohio). So, how do you feel about upturned collars and majoring in business?

One thing that hasn't been suggested yet is contact the Philadelphia Alumni Association. They will be able to help you and they probably give scholarships to one or two philly kids each year who want to attend OSU.

btw, i never took the ACT and it wasn't a problem.

See the right hand side of this page: http://undergrad.osu.edu/domesticfreshman.html

Criteria: http://undergrad.osu.edu/FreshAdmissioncriteria.html

70% of the latest incoming class were in the top 20% of their HS class. 67% had above a 26 ACT/1180 SAT (old scale).

Another item: http://www.osu.edu/news/newsitem1465

Ohio State's first-year class of 6,162 students, recruited from 19,000 applicants, is the most talented and best-prepared in the university's history in terms of test scores and class rank, continuing a trend that began 12 years ago. The average ACT score for the class was 26.4; the average SAT score was 1200. Forty-four percent were in the top 10 percent of their high school class and 80 percent were in the top 25 percent of their class.

As Ohio State students have become better prepared academically, more are staying in school and graduating. In 1994, 78 percent of freshman stayed to their sophomore year. This year, a record 91.5 percent of first-year students who entered a year ago have returned.

Diversity is also up, with students of color accounting for 15.8 percent of the 2006 freshman class, and 16.1 percent of the total university enrollment. There was a record high enrollment of 241 for American Indian or Alaskan Native students, a record high enrollment of 2,887 for Asian or Pacific Islander students and a record high of 1,305 for Hispanic students. African American enrollment remained nearly steady with 3,889 students, a declined of 0.1 percent.

What majors are you considering?

My advice would be to take both the ACT and SAT, and take both multiple times. I personally had an easy time with the ACT (even though I took it 3 or 4 times) but didn't like the SAT (only took it once). I improved my ACT score the 2nd and 3rd times I took it with no other preparation at all.

I don't mean to sound like a prick, but if you're trying to get into college and don't know what the ACT's are you've got your work cut out for you. Try using google. I'm sure you'll find more than enough info on the difference between the SAT and ACT

The ACT is simply another standardized test that you can use to get into college. Which test people take is largely linked to area. For instance, I was the only person in my class (in rural Ohio) to take the SAT, while I understand it is fairly unheard of to take the ACT on the coasts.

It's to your benefit to take both tests (and multiple times, like Clevebucks said) because OSU really doesn't care which test you take, and some people do better on one test than the other. The ACT has 4 sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science, while the SAT had Math and Verbal before (I think they've added a Writing section). I know they test abilities a little differently, so give them both a shot. For preparation, I'd just buy a practice book and do a few practice tests. Studying otherwise may be helpful (some people take entire classes from Kaplan or the like), but I never thought it was worth it.

Spend time on the other parts of your application as well. What do you have in the way of extracurriculars? You'll have to get letters of recommendation from teachers as well, along with essays on the application (when I applied, there were a handful of paragraph-long essays). I'd say that at a school like Ohio State (as opposed to a smaller school), the numbers (GPA, test scores) are more important than this stuff, but it shouldn't be discounted either.
