Gameday did a segment on helmet stickers today.

The first Buckeye stickers were awarded in 1967. The first sticker that Woody awarded was to Jim Nein, for an interception against Oregon in a 30-0 win. Note - there are some official tOSU websites that incorrectly list 1968 as the first year for Buckeye leaves.

But helmet stickers were first awarded at Miami of Ohio. Assistant coach Jim Young gave stickers to the freshmen team in 1964, and varsity stickers were first awarded by Miami of Ohio head coach Bo Schembechler in 1965, in the shape of tomahawks.

[sarcasm]Why on earth would the Red Hawks put tomahawk stickers on their helmets?[/sarcasm]

According to the segment, Young's inspiration for helmet stickers were the kill marks on WWII aircraft.

Given the military historical connection and the Miami connection, it's no surprise Woody jumped on the idea.

Unfortunately, the segment did not definitively answer whether Buckeye leaves are green or black.
