  • Use this thread to relive memories of Buckeye players that showed extraordinary heart wearing the Scarlet and Gray on the field...

I'll start with a recent one...

Bobby C coming out on crutches after breaking his leg against scUM in '05. My heart dopped into my stomach when he hobbled of the field so early. We all felt his pain having to go out so early in such a huge game, but watching him actually shed tears on the sideline made him one of my favorite Buckeyes ever....

Gotta say Clarett's performance in the 2002 scUM game. He said his arm was still killing him, had it bandaged to the point of being immobile and he controlled that game from the outset.

Also Ashton Youboty's blocked kick return agianst scUM Lite. He was playing hurt that day as well.

I'd throw in MoC's strip of the fumble return in the Fiesta Bowl as well...I'll never forget that play.

Just about any game that Chris Spielman played in,

...but especially his first game as a Freshman, screaming on the sidelines "Put me in! I gotta play!" (I think he even had a sprained ankle that game)...I think that's my favorite Buckeye story of all time.

And the '86 game vs. scUM where he had 29 tackles .

For me it's gotta be Krenzel in the 2002 National Title Game. He took the beating of a lifetime from the Miami defense but yet did not back down. I even remember a play where he got absolutely destroyed by both Sean Taylor and Johnathon Vilma, and got up, to the announcers surprise.

My memory isn't the best... but from c deck i recall he didn't play that much.. but when he was on the field the team became electric and his runs he did have were great

Justin Zwick in the Alamo Bowl. He would throw a pass then collapse onto the turf because of either the pain or he couldn't put his weight on his hurt leg, yet still managed to play a hell of a game.
And he managed to stay with the team after all the troy smith stuff and never said a bad word about any of it, JZ is a class act.

How about Antonio Smith vs. Indiana last year? He was a monster in that game, a couple of big hits on Lewis, and I believe he led the team in tackles in that one. I'm sure that performance is one of the reasons why he was able to become a semi-finalist for the Thorpe this past year. Watching him showed you what being a real buckeye is about, and Smith knows exactly that, because he's worked for everything he's gotten. Also with him being a Columbus native, makes it all the better!!

Joe Montgomery was a guy with heart.

He came close to losing his leg at the knee after taking a wicked hit directly to his knee. I am not a doctor, but from what I remember there was some arterial damage and they thought it might irreversibly (is that even a word) interrupt the blood flow to his lower leg.

He made it through the injury and back to the playing field. There was always more talent around him, but not more heart. He was behind Wiley in the lineup on a very talented team in 98.

After the MSU debacle in 98, our next game was at Iowa. It was clear early in that game that we were suffering a hangover and we struggled. Until Joe got his longest TD as a buckeye(IIRC)

We went to the bowl game that year to see tOSU beat aTm. Anyone who went to that game, saw that the Buckeye fans were outnumbered 3:1. We were concentrated mainly in the one endzone of the Superdome.

After the game the team gets together and is celebrating. After a minute, Joe breaks from the team, takes his helmet off and heads right for us fans. You could see the tears in his eyes. It was his last game as a Buckeye and you could tell how much it meant to him.

Good choices. I believe Ashton hurt himself landing wrong on that very block.
