This list that Rivals put together lists Washington State's Bill Doba getting the ax yesterday (11/26), and Joe Novak has stepped down from Northern Illinois (not sure whether that had been mentioned earlier in the year or not). Novak was a great coach and NIU (and the MAC) will miss him.

I wonder if Mike Price wants his old job back

Not huge news but Jeff Bower, Southern Miss's coach, won't be coming back for year 18.

On the contrary, I think that is huge news. I would have figured Bower to be one of the more untouchable coaches out there.

Apparently Southern Miss isn't happy with the status quo, and is off to find their own Tim Brewster.

Say goodbye to all that revenue from those nationally televised Thursday and Friday night games Bower got the school w/ their ESPN deal over the past 10 years.

Northern Illinois' Novak retires

ASSOCIATED PRESS


DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois football coach Joe Novak retired yesterday, two days after his team finished a 2-10 season.

Novak, 62, spent 16 years at NIU, including the past 12 as head coach. He turned the Huskies into winners after losing 23 consecutive games early in his tenure.

Novak compiled a 63-75
record while guiding the Northern Illinois to unprecedented success, including two bowl games and seven straight winning seasons from 2000-06.

"People have always said you'll know when it's time and I promise you, I know it's time," Novak said. "Selfishly, it's time for my wife and I. It's been a great, great ride but it's time."

Novak coached NIU to three wins over top 25 teams. In 2003, the Huskies were ranked as high as No. 12 and set a school record with 10 wins.
