Can make an argument that they were one or two play calls around from a fairly masterful coaching effort to mask some large deficiencies.

Vs Miami they couldn't find a solution to we can't block them whatsoever. I don't know if that's necessarily a coaching blunder. There were some play clock and cadence choices that were questionable but they did not manufacture their failures the way they did against Michigan 2024

The best player on the field vs Miami also turned over the best Miami player twice. And the outcome of those two game-changing fumbles were I believe two separate scoring drives In favor of the team doing the fumbling. In a game with almost no scoring.

After rewatching the game recently, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Day took over play calling after the first few series against Miami. Ohio State outplayed Miami force middle part of the game. Then Miami counterpunched and Ohio State ran out of gas in the fourth.

The mantra of the offseason has been win the fourth quarter because of that, and Day brought in an OC who can competently stack several punches together to deal with counterpunches at a massively more effective level than Hartline was capable of.

The coaching failure in the Miami game was the OL silent snap count. Zero variation. We helped make a very good Miami DL look incredible.

Nobody is perfect.

He seems to avoid the weird mid-season game where it looks like they'd never played football before like Urban had....and even though Tressel was an offensive-minded coach, his teams always seem to move the ball inefficiently.

The fun part is plan A usually works so damn well....it's hard to sometimes put too much time into plan B. So I think most of us understand that, even if we wish there would be a more cohesive plan B at times...

Other than The Game 2024, I really can't remember Day having any of those "WTF" games. Like you said, Urban seemed to to suffer at least one of those every year. They usually managed to pull them out, but as Iowa and Purdue showed, not always.

Urban relied on intensity and motivation so much, my belief is that once a year his teams were just mentally/emotionally checked out and you had his head scratcher. Only Urban could stay as intense as Urban for as long as Urban. College kids couldn't do it. NFL players told him to fuck off.

I think Day's probably not a great in game/adjustment coach. Like @Mike80 said, there has never been a perfect coach and Day wasn't going to be the first.

He is a great QB developer and overall offensive mind. He has managed to keep the OSU machine running at an extremely high level overall. He's won a NC, I mean it is what it is at this point.

The knock/fear I would still have is if they get this salary cap stuff in place and teams generally abide by it, you are going to have an NFL type environment where resources are more even, talent is more even and the really excellent X/O coaches really become difference makers. There is nothing about Day so far that makes me think he can do more with less, or even similar, talent. He relies on having better Jimmie's and Joe's.

Just being honest but I am not a coach. I could be dead wrong (I hope).
