HC Ryan Day (B1G Coach of Year, B1G Champion, National Champion)

Ok. I was his biggest critic. Only fair that I share current state thoughts. (excuse typo's and odd rambling......I'm on my way to falling down drunk. But before I go....)

Not much else to say, the man just closed the loop, healed the timeline whatever the fuck you want to call it. He did what all of us that were raised to respect the idea that an imperfect man can fall but rise again can recognize.

2019 = hero

2021-20203 = act II The hero struggles/evil triumphs (The Empire Strikes Back)

2024 to date = the hero triumphs

cue up Beethoven's 7th for the soundtrack

The Game is different now. It will always matter but he's had to shepherd it through a transition like no one else had had to deal with. He had to deal with the bad guys cheating.

He's grown, he's passed through the fire of being nice to people vs doing what you gotta do for you and yours (which is no small thing) basically gone from that scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset. Easy to imagine, incredibly difficult to do.

I didn't think he had it in him to be honest. Anyone who says they knew it all along is full of shit or a sycophant but not looking to fight about it.

All I can say is what an amazing turn around. Anyone looking for an inspiring redemption arc story, look no further.

Tip o' the cap Ryan. You are the man now. The Man in your own way, just like your kids get The Game in their own way. I see it in my own son, he gets it, he paid the price these past 4 years but here learned. The Rivalry is in good hands.

I never doubted him as an offensive mind.
I never doubted that he was a good man.

Now, I don't doubt that he is elite.

Glad to have him and thank Woody (and Urban) he snapped last year became "evil"/aggressive Ryan Day.

Now go win the whole fucking thing again, repeat and they won't know whether to shit or go blind for fucks sake.

Tip o' the cap Ryan.

You deserve the it.

If the cheating never happened, this post would have never happened.

Let’s not forget that Harbaugh bitched out of the 2020 game like a fucking coward, too, which was a huge factor in reversing the series momentum, in addition to getting his big brother to bail him out with a DC.

Now that Day’s gotten this thing right again, we can more easily marvel at the truly pathetic bullshittery Harbaugh stooped to as he stared 0-6, and 0-2 against Day, in the face in 2020.

If the cheating and 2024 hadn't happened he would have never snapped into aggressive Ryan Day and the playoff run doesn't happen. He is still playing not to lose.

"Here is my best, this is what I do. If you stop it then good on you but I'm not going to play scared of failing. I'm going to swing." That mindset takes him away from what coaches like Cooper did when they had great talent.

Honest to Woody, if that's what it took to get this guy to go from pretty solid to evil legend then it was worth it. It was a brutal journey for everyone but now you've got a guy who competes the right way. Relaxed, confident and focused. You see guys dialed in like that and you get up from the table and find another game.

If I am a top recruit or current player, I am considering not only the developmental value playing on a Day-coached team, but also the fact that he considers carefully the cumulative effects of the number of plays on your body and runs a slow tempo game for that reason. The value of this for the upcoming NC run is important.

True. On the other hand, Michigan and Texas can guarantee you'll be playing in as many as 4 fewer games per year.

Wanted to comment on something I’ve found extremely unique to this years team….

We run the fewest amount of plays per game. It’s insanely counter-intuitive, as Day always liked a bit of tempo and to maximize amount of possessions. And common wisdom is, if you have the better players, you want more possessions bc over the course of a game, the extra possessions will favor the better team.

But Day has been pretty pissed over last few years over the amount of possessions per game when a team slows pace and tries to shorten game.

To his credit, he gave up on trying to increase possessions per game, and focused on maximizing points per possession. And to maximize that stat, they take more time between plays to make sure they will execute play to its maximum potential. They play slower but execute at a higher level.

I found this strategy to be very odd as it played out throughout season, but I’ll give him his flowers. It’s not necessarily the most exciting, but it has worked extremely well. It’s like he’s beating our opponents at their game….with much better players. He took lemons and made lemonade…
