We've talked enough about Texas. Let's change the subject.
Remember Three’s Company? Great show. Single guy living with two attractive, platonic women for rent-covering purposes; overbearing conservative landlord, googly-eyed goofy building manager. Appointment television and wildly entertaining.
The show was famous for its escalating comic misunderstandings. There was one in every episode. Crazy amounts of tension and ridiculous circumstances facing our beloved protagonists, always as a result of their own actions. The tightening was palpable.
Mr. Furley would show up at a critical point and make his googly-eyed goofy Oh Shit face directly into the camera. The episodes weren’t all exactly the same, but they were thematically simpatico.

Our church has no bells.
Again with the "we beat ourselves" mantra from Day. If that's true, then just stop fucking doing it. Saying that doesn't make it better at this point. I'd rather hear: "You know, we gave it what we had, but in the fourth quarter, Texas just kicked out ass, wore us out, and there wasn't anything we could do about it. We're going to look at it, work on it, and fix it." Instead, we get the same tired and, apparently, empty homily.

The counter argument is that Woody, JT and Earle probably wouldn't have gotten the 20 point lead to try and milk.
I mean, part of what I have made my peace with is in the statement of "all the losses are the same".
It's just the way he is, you get the good with the bad.
It's not like we can call to the bullpen at halftime and have Tress come calmly walking out of the dressing room to Tresselball the opponent to death with a second half lead.
Everyone can do their own thing but for me, I'm over the angst part. Day is what Day is, you get the rain and you get the mud.

Just to add my .02 cents….
Certain coaches possess a quality where even if they make a mistake or lose a game, you don’t really question their knowledge/ability. I think of a Pete Carol, Bill Belichek, Nick Saban, etc. type. They’ve all dealt with forms of losing throughout the years, but built enough credibility where they always get benefit of the doubt bc there’s a “mastery” of the game.
Day just doesn’t have that IMO….i can cite numerous examples (not knowing when to go for 2 after a TD, going for it on 4th down against Oregon too frequently early in career, not being aggressive enough last few years)…
He understands offense. He understands QB development……I don’t think he has a firm understanding of game management, clock management, and an overall pulse on things outside of offense. It may sound harsh, but I think it’ll be an issue that crops up throughout his career bc I don’t think u develop that, it’s something you basically have or don’t. Day gets second guessed constantly because he shows glaring weakness when it comes to situational football.

If his only criticism came from fans so what. But criticism from his peers may just be sour grapes but some has validity too. Day is to into proving people wrong. Even if it results in some head scratchers.

In another context, to the extent that I defend McGuff, it’s for at least doing this. I think he needs rangier players, more rebounding, and more depth to do what he’s trying to do at an elite level, but at least we know what they’re trying to do.
I’m very much pro-Day for how he runs the program generally, but when I watch these close losses that all seem very similar, I always think of the scene in the Avengers in which Colson tells Loki that he’s going to lose because he lacks conviction. At this point, I don’t even think that we can’t recruit a clutch kicker, so much as that Day’s lack of conviction filters down to everyone on the team when the pressure is at its highest and then things like Sayin missing wide-open TD throws, Smith dropping catchable balls, and statistically decent kickers blowing short or medium distance FGs happens. The best solution is probably for Day to work with an elite professional performance coach to change himself, but if that can’t be done or doesn’t work, then recruiting needs to target a few more hyper cocky guys at positions like QB and kicker who seem choke-proof.

Agree. He needs a bench coach like baseball.
In game management is a skill and he is mediocre at it (not as the HC of a major program like OSU-two different things).
He just isn't the guy who will take your roster and beat you with it by sheer guts and wile.
I think that is actually the cleanest way to sum him up at this point and why all the maddening losses (all like 3 to 5 of them) are so fucking maddening. Same can be said of many guys these days though (Sark especially comes to mind).

Every episode felt, you know, similar. The tightening. The clenching. The inability to deploy a shake-up of any kind to calm everyone down, reduce the pressure and eliminate the fear of making mistakes. Is Three’s Company a euphemism for the Buckeyes’ cursed field goal unit?

The last 3 good teams the Buckeyes have played (Indiana,Miami,Texas) have won. I need to see a lot more . Homer is dead. Pick it up.
