HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

I don't even think a downfield passing game is mandatory in harsh conditions. Just create more movement and misdirection. Our freakish WRs can get open for low difficulty passes
Infact 2 high means the opposite. throw slants outs and hitches for 5-10 all the way down field and let your atheletes try to pop it as opposed for throwing the bomb

For me, personally, winning a NC is incredible, but losing to ttun is still unacceptable. It's not an either/or. A national championship is the pinnacle of the sport and unbelievably difficult to accomplish, especially now with the expanded playoff. That said, would this NC feel as good as 2002 or 2014? Not for me, sorry. There will always be that itchy scar from losing The Game.

For me, we haven't seen enough national championships for me to gripe about what happened leading up to it. But, I completely get what you're saying.

It would be different, for sure. But that doesn't mean it should be appreciated any less.

Different isn't just bad either. You know what else is different?

-Beating four top 7 teams in a row (two of them from the godforsaken SEC)
-Beating three top 5 teams in a row
-Beating five top 5 teams overall, an NCAA record in a single season
-Getting revenge on Oregon and curb stomping them in Pasadena
-Beating Texas in Texas and getting a top 3 play/moment in Buckeye history in the process
-Beating Notre fucking Dame in the National Championship Game
-Winning the first ever 12 team Playoff

This team would be making history in many, many ways. This was a historic gauntlet that I'm confident would not be matched for a long time. I think many people are kinda overlooking this right now because it's happening so quickly, we're still in the thick of it and the job's not finished...but when you sit back and take a 10,000 foot view of it all, it's really, really special and absolutely unprecedented.

I'll never forget that Michigan loss; for me it's easily the biggest "WTF" moment in program history and it will be talked about forever because of that. However, if they pull this thing off? I'm not going to let it bother me. In one single night we can match the number of National Championships they've won in the last 77 years, so...fuck 'em.

I want to win national championships. They're fun. Helps recruiting. Bragging rights over most of CFB.

I NEED to beat TSUN. It give me sustenance. Gives us the only Bragging rights I really give a shit about. Helps recruiting guys who beat TSUN.

I lived thru the reverse carpetbagger's hot tub disaster era. I'm owed the overall record. I'd rather be 1-11 with a win over tsun than any other scenario that doesn't include a win over them. Period.

Would it feel better than 2006 or 2019? Undefeated regular seasons, we beat TTUN, but didn't get the title at the end.

There's nuanced answers, but I tend to think we don't look back fondly on the 2006 team as much as we should because Florida and the SEC had bragging rights for 8 years. I think how we look back on seasons like 2006 shows that a National Title is indeed worth more than a win in The Game (for most of us at least).

I heard him uttering the words, “we knew it would come down to the 4extent the 4th quarter” and I wondered if he really has learned why he lost to TCUN. ND will be a very tough game. I hope he realizes that ripping their hearts out early will help a lot to avoid the need for last second heroics.
i think he’s well on his way to exorcising his demons from his early years and is maturing as a leader. he’s not throwing the words “tough” and “toughness” into his responses at all anymore. he used to do that before it seems in every other sentence.

he’s more now talking about facing “adversity”, being “resilient”, and showing “grit”, which i think are different (and more nuanced”) than just trying to show everyone that he’s “tough”..

I
And that right there is what the whole issue boils down too. OSSU/TCUN has been called the greatest rivalry in sports and rightly so. Many of us here go back to when Woody was still coaching and have lived through the joys and heartbreaks of it. But something I've asked some younger fans who complain about Day is if they know WHY it's such a huge rivalry. Many can't answer.
They don't remember when The Game actually was winner take all and could make or break a season. and was like that for most of it's 127 year history. They don't remember when it usually determined the B1G Champion and had National Championship implications either directly or indirectly. When one of the teams could enter The Game undefeated but a loss would leave you sitting at home because only 1 B1G team was allowed to go bowling. It happened to TCUN 3 years in a row in the 70s ( and it was glorious).
For us fans, especially the older ones, we will always feel that way about it, but the truth is, in today's college football landscape, bragging rights is really all that is left. All of those other implications that made the rivalry so great no longer really apply. It's hard for us fans to accept but it's the new reality. We are in a world where OSU and TCUN could play two weeks in a row and possibly a 3rd time in the playoff ( unlikely but possible) Doesn't that really cheapen the importance of The Game?
For us fans, ( especially us members of tOSULF) The game will always hold that symbolic importance, but in today's climate, it's just that. Symbolic. This year is a perfect example........a loss to those cheating bastards but still standing on the doorstep of a Natty.

Oh my gosh.

As much as you and I may hate it, they put years up inside the stadium for National Championships, not Michigan victories.

Would you have traded a scUM win for no National Championship possibilities?

If you say “yes” then you are crazy.
my heart says "no".

but... my brain says that NC's bring in huge revenue and will ensure that this program continues on the path it's on and that it stays competitive at the highest level... something no other program has been able to do for as long as osu. simply put, the most talented kids will not want to come to a program which is not competing for a national championship or able to get them prime time exposure. that was the real draw for bama. same for georgia. i'm no sure it was "playing for saban" or playing for "kirby".

the beauty of the new CFL era is that we don't need to choose. achieving those two goals are exclusive of one another. i can do without the conf championships... i'm not sure how much upside there is to playing in one or winning it, even. beating tsun gives me all the bragging rights i want. winning a natti covers the rest.

beating tsun is a MUST.
winning a natti is a nice bonus.

That is the best description of it I have seen in the 20 some odd years since the dark cloud passed.

As far as the which would you rather have debate goes, to me, you are going to have to win The Game more than you lose it because even in this brave new world of 12 teams playoff you just aren't going to run the table that often. Even when you do make a nice run, see how warm and friendly the fans are after you lose The Game and come up short of a NC.

We are on an artificial sugar rush right now. Let's seal the fucking deal first and foremost then see how we feel.

This is all new to everyone.

This year especially. Coming off the three years of cheating it was paramount to put those cocksuckers in their place. I'm still dumbfounded.

And even if Day delivers the Natty next week his job number 1 for 2025 is to fix his Vulvarine problem.
