HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

I remember back in 19 when Day took the job, my reaction was definitely that of a mixed bag. Wasn't sure if he had the experience or the guts to take over the top spot at a place like OSU.

Within weeks, my doubts turned to complete confidence. The team was humming, Day took a squad of uber talented guys and did what Urban couldn't the previous two years. I had a feeling he was gonna be the guy to take this program to its greatest heights. Good hires at the coordinator spots, and the results were speaking for themselves. The 19 Clemson game was a heartbreaker, but it was the first red flag. Easy to dismiss at the time cause it was his first failure.

Hell, I remember LJB writing a long post about how he thought OSU was about to go on a historical, dynastic run. And shit, I agreed. All the pieces were there, he was recruiting well, and seemingly putting guys in the perfect position to succeed.

Unfortunately, it seems year one may have been the true peak of quality, and it's only been going downhill since (albeit slowly enough where the dip isn't so obvious). We know who he is, he's not a terrible coach, but this ain't for him. Too bad too, he's a good guy, and very easy to root for.

Time to move on.

You are talking about the scum game only. Unfortunately wit the loss of the divisions in the big 10 and the changes to the CFP system, beating scum is no longer the be all end all like it once was. The game is still the game but it no longer should be the only criteria that anyone gives a damn about. Too many changes in CFB. Winning a significant portion of the overall games has now taken over imo if you are wanting to win a NC.

If he was only losing The Game I could actually buy into this because I do agree that the future isn't all about The Game (however hard it is for me to even type that).

That said, the man is 1-3 in the CFP so far and 1-1 in NY6/Bowl games. His big game choke personality reveals itself in all pressure situations. It isn't just The Game.

We have weapons all over the field on offense, literally, and the offensive efficiency has been trash this year. It’s not just about the Michigan game…..it’s also about consistently slow starts, sleep walking through games, and not playing with any passion or hunger. If his teams aren’t doing it by now, I don’t see why we think it will change.

I get it…..I was a massive Day supporter and went to bat for him many times throughout the years. But he’s been given enough time and rope to correct the issues that have plagued his teams….and he’s proven he doesn’t have the ability to make the corrections necessary.

Good guy, not a great coach. Firing him comes with massive risk, but keeping him just keeps us on this treadmill of mediocrity.

Day has been ruined by the cheating scandal .. and fake issues like toughness and Chip only fed Days insecurities. If Day stays he needs an infusion of Coaches that make him uncomfortable.
He needs coaches that aren’t happy with being coordinators. He needs coaches that want his job.

Kelly was the worst choice. He reinforced all of Days issues. BOB would have been better…if he had full control.

Someone needs to look this up but Day has a chance to end the season 0-2 for the 4th straight year. I’m gonna guess it’s Cooper, if he even did it. We haven’t won a game after Thanksgiving since 2020.

And to everyone playing down the consistent trench recruiting failures with “we just need to hit the portal”. Unless we’re tampering (which knowing OSU if we even tried we’d get busted) you’re getting backups or 3rd string guys not cunt beating OL, much less NC OL. I’m tired of it.

I’ve said it for the last two years+ something is rotten in the Woody and it needs to be cleansed with fire. I’m talking everyone back room guys as well as recruiting folks. Burn it all down
OSU beat Utah 48-45 in the January 2022 consolation Rose Bowl.

You are right. We need to cut Day Monday and begin the transition to the future. Let LJ or Knowles assume interim HC. Make Hartline OC. The future will need to be Marcus Freeman or Matt Campbell.….with Hartline and JL in place to recruit. Heck - bring Eddie George in as RB coach. Go all in on guys who can recruit with a proven competent HC. Campbell is more proven than Freeman so he has the inside track. With this collection of offensive and defensive talent I’m confident Campbell would be at least as successful as Day and is from Ohio

I think Day is just who he is, he hasn't changed or been ruined by anything other than over promotion. He's a QB coach and passing game coordinator who got thrown in to deep end and couldn't swim.

Urban Meyer does not have a stellar track record of developing assistant coaches. In fact, his coaching tree is pretty underwhelming to non existent. It's just the way he was, he won through a force of personality more than anything else.

The next guy at fault is Gene Smith. I know people are trying to create the narrative that he was a program builder but he failed leadership of a large organization 101 when he let an underling pick his own successor without a credible, independent job search. He was sidelined for Urban's hiring, firing/rage quitting and then let the man pick his own successor. Gene fucked this up more than anyone else.

Lastly my thoughts go to us as a fan base/alumni/boosters etc. A lot has changed since 2018. Urban and Saban are gone from the CFP landscape. NIL and transfer portal are here. Expanded playoff is here. Expanded conference is here. We have to let this idea go that OSU is one of 2-3 colossus programs standing unassailably above everyone else. Our brand is top 5 as are the all time results. Our facilities are first rate, our NIL game is strong but seemingly not elite. It's got to be run more like an NFL team now, like it or not. We can't mortgage everything on The Game. It's about winning 10 or so a year to make the playoffs and then taking advantage of those shots (as near as I can tell with my cracked up crystal ball).

We need new leadership that can give the team a punchers chance (50/50) in big games against like talent. The bully that can only over power the most talent disadvantaged opponents is useless to us. It seems nice but it gives us no way to win. You have to have an unsupportable level of talent and even when you pull that off, you are at a game day disadvantage to teams that get more out of fewer resources (talent).

It's more and more going to be like NFL/running a real business. There is no such thing as unlimited resources. Money, and the talent it can buy, are scarce. You must have a coach/CEO/leader that gets the most return on your dollar.

Don't be afraid to start over. You are on a path to worse and worse outcomes. Stopping now and going in any new direction at least has some chance for upside. Staying the course is guaranteed death.

The decision is simple, executing on it will be hard.

I think Urban would say Day has the talent from an X’s and O’s perspective to be great but doesn’t have the personality to inspire his kids to get over the hump in critical moments.

Day has spent entire off-seasons trying to cultivate that ability but I think some are just born with it, and others can try, but at most, they’re just faking it. And Day is certainly faking that intestinal fortitude he tries to project.

I also think you see where Urban lived on the edges in both his coaching staff and kids he’d recruit…..you did get that “choke you out over a game of checkers” vibe. That also comes with some external issues nobody likes to deal with.

I think Ryan is a nice guy and his teams are generally pretty good. But they take on his personality which is finesse and not a “grind it out” attitude. Urban was going to run the ball down your throat and then take deep shots. Day actually needs to throw to set up the pass bc he’s never liked to play bully-ball. And it comes full circle bc in trying to prove that he’s developed this machismo that Meyer, Saban, Kirby Smart have proven they have, Day actively sabotages his team to try and be something they aren’t. Will Howard was playing excellent early on taking soft spots in zone defense and making the easy throws for 5,6,7 yards. But Day HAD to prove OSU can play bully ball, and stubbornly cut his nose off in spite of his face.

It’s so disappointing…..just a spectacular fail with an unbelievably talented team. I’m not a psychologist, but I’d say Ryan has a bit of an identity problem and it manifests itself in how the team plays.
I’m more curious as to what Urban saw in Day to recommend him. Why does/did he think he was the right guy? What qualities made him the guy and pushed the University from doing its due diligence in a national search?

We all know Urban doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to hiring assistants. This honestly smacks of another he’s my guy, so of course he’s gonna be good scenario.

I’m as disappointed in the University for their part in this hire as I am Urban.
