This is a really valid point and I'd like to add to it.
Urban Meyers power spread system was great for wins, but poor for individual stats outside of the RB. While we've landed amazing recruits at WR and QB, I think those positions can actually get better under Day. And let me stress, I know Haskins and Martell are amazing recruits. But keep in mind we swung Haskins over from MD. A 4* recruit. Meyer commented at the time that Haskins was the best pure passer he had ever recruited (which turned out to be true) but without Ryan Day to mold Haskins and implement this years system, Haskins is likely struggling in a system that doesn't fit him. Going forward, I believe we will be in the running for numerous 5* QB's who in the past, would've looked at our power spread system, and ruled us out.
In the same vein, as much as we love the Terry McClaurin's, KJ Hill's, Johnnie Dixon's.....they're great.....I believe the opportunity for WR's to put their skills on display increases under Day. For reference, under Urban Meyer, the current best receiver in the NFL Michael Thomas, had a career best of 54 catches for 799 yards and 9 TD's. This year with Day's offense, KJ Hill had 67 catches for 831 yards. I love some KJ Hill, but he ain't no Michael Thomas. Parris Campbell also bested Michael Thomas's career best numbers with 79 catches for 992 yards.
Day was already instrumental in landing Garrett Wilson from Texas, who will be a beast at OSU with a developed QB. I expect Day to be able to really turn heads of WR's and QB's across the country.
The biggest ?'s for me will be how we do with defensive recruits. While Meyer didn't coach that side of the ball, he was a master closer and recruiter. I think Meyer's biggest strength as a coach, is his psychology edge. He used it recruiting, he used it on gameday, and he used it against coaches when giving speeches in front of them. Meyer could open a psychology practice tomorrow, and be completely booked within weeks.
It's tough to say what is going to set Day apart beyond his grasp of the X's and O's. That's important, but elite Head Coaches need to be more than strategic geniuses. I look forward to seeing how Day grows into the roll.
