HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

If Day can keep 75% of the national talent that Urban was able to pull in, while reestablishing a stronger foothold in Ohio, He should still be able to win the B1G on talent alone most years, IMO. If he can pull in a solid DC, his ceiling is much higher.
Day may have at least one plus relative to Meyer. Meyer's one apparent weakness was his loyalty to coaches based on relationships (Davis and Smith) over ability.

Hopefully Day will hire the best he can and hold them accountable.

The flipside of that is the ongoing "about to end" pitch has been hurting OSU with Meyer and LJ Sr. One half of that band-aid is ripped off and they can start to heal. The other side should be known soon. This is a perfect time to go for LJ Sr, if he returns, he's here for a good bit longer.

This is a really valid point and I'd like to add to it.

Urban Meyers power spread system was great for wins, but poor for individual stats outside of the RB. While we've landed amazing recruits at WR and QB, I think those positions can actually get better under Day. And let me stress, I know Haskins and Martell are amazing recruits. But keep in mind we swung Haskins over from MD. A 4* recruit. Meyer commented at the time that Haskins was the best pure passer he had ever recruited (which turned out to be true) but without Ryan Day to mold Haskins and implement this years system, Haskins is likely struggling in a system that doesn't fit him. Going forward, I believe we will be in the running for numerous 5* QB's who in the past, would've looked at our power spread system, and ruled us out.

In the same vein, as much as we love the Terry McClaurin's, KJ Hill's, Johnnie Dixon's.....they're great.....I believe the opportunity for WR's to put their skills on display increases under Day. For reference, under Urban Meyer, the current best receiver in the NFL Michael Thomas, had a career best of 54 catches for 799 yards and 9 TD's. This year with Day's offense, KJ Hill had 67 catches for 831 yards. I love some KJ Hill, but he ain't no Michael Thomas. Parris Campbell also bested Michael Thomas's career best numbers with 79 catches for 992 yards.

Day was already instrumental in landing Garrett Wilson from Texas, who will be a beast at OSU with a developed QB. I expect Day to be able to really turn heads of WR's and QB's across the country.

The biggest ?'s for me will be how we do with defensive recruits. While Meyer didn't coach that side of the ball, he was a master closer and recruiter. I think Meyer's biggest strength as a coach, is his psychology edge. He used it recruiting, he used it on gameday, and he used it against coaches when giving speeches in front of them. Meyer could open a psychology practice tomorrow, and be completely booked within weeks.

It's tough to say what is going to set Day apart beyond his grasp of the X's and O's. That's important, but elite Head Coaches need to be more than strategic geniuses. I look forward to seeing how Day grows into the roll.

I think we're going to find that recruiting holds up. Kids, stars want to play in a modern attacking offense. We were close to becoming stagnant before Urban was smart enough to get rid of Beck and bring in Day and Wilson and even then, well, we saw the stubborn reluctance to move away from the spread option. We're seeing more QB talent than we've ever had in the stable with more to come and college football is becoming more of a QB-driven game. As great as things have been, I'd argue that we've underutilized some of our best offensive talent; Curtis Samuel, Braxton Miller (after the injury). It helps that Day was here under Urban and that Urban says he'll stay around and involved with recruits on campus. We're on the right track.

First concern is Recruiting. Do we lose anyone already committed? Do we land some of the 5*s we are chasing?

Second concern, does he understand that the Defensive scheme blows?

Third concern, does the DFBIA really think they will win The Game next year LMAO?

MDBuckeye has an excellent breakdown on the bolded in the 2019 Recruiting Discussion thread. To simplify for the purposes of this thread, imo we keep most of our commits by naming Day the HC now, but UFM's retirement will inevitably lead to missing on some of the higher ranked guys that we were chasing. Nobody could close like Urban.

While I definitely think growing up around The Game helps- it’s something special to the people in Ohio that understand the state, program and university.

What also helps? Scheme. And gameplanning. And having the stones to call a Game perfectly in the biggest moment.

Day passed that test this year.
Agreed.

I know plenty of people in Ohio who don’t get it and don’t tell me that there are guys on this team and alumni from out of state who dont fully appreciate it the way many of us do.

You’re exactly correct. Passed with flying colors.

Thats why IMO Day going and getting an elite defensive coordinator like a Dom Brown/Bud Foster would be huge. Bring in someone who has his shit together on defense and who can dominate.

If he does that I'm confident we will be the best in the big ten for a long time
