I apologize if this should be in another thread, but I want it out where people can read it rather than buried in a thread. Feel free to merge it if needed.
I’m tired of all of the sky is falling, what are we going to do now posts that I’ve seen since I got back to my computer last night. We just lost the closest of games to the #2 team in the nation! Do I think JT’s play calling was perfect Saturday? No, but it was good enough that he put us in a position to win, and that’s all we can ask for. The players need to make plays, and unfortunately many of our guys didn’t make enough plays to win the game. I know they all played their butts off and will come back next week and do it again. The college football season is so long that it is too much to expect the team to go out and win every game. In my mind we are still one of the top 5 teams in the nation, because I think we could go out and beat any other team. Unfortunately, Texas was able to make a couple more plays than us and pulled out the win this time. I would love to have a rematch with them in the Rose Bowl because I still think that OSU can beat them.
I give Texas all the credit in the world for coming in and winning that game in the Shoe. Vince Young is much better than I thought he would be. He made a few amazing plays even after getting smacked around for much of the game. Young is the only QB to leave the Shoe a Heisman Candidate and I give him props for a great game.
As far as our QB play goes, I think both Zwick and Smith had good and bad things happen through the course of the game. I get pissed off when people (Demetrius Stanley) bash Zwick for one mistake he made at the end of the game. Zwick’s passes were far more actuate than Smith’s as a whole. He can’t be faulted for drops when he hits guys in the hands. Even though I’m sure JT will never say it Zwick is a better 2 minute type of QB than Smith, which is why Zwick was out there for the last drive. Smith made a couple good throws, but he was also off on several of them and he seemed to run too much, either by design or play calling. Personally, I thought that JT would go with Smith on the last drive just because we had 2:35 and only needed 30-40 yards to get Huston into fg range. Conversely, Zwick has more 2 minute experience (Marshall and Northwestern) and has been successful. IMO he tried to do too much and it resulted in a fumble. It is a mistake to place all the blame on Zwick for one bad play, when so many other players made mistakes that were just as costly. JT was in a no win situation, because if he has sent Smith out there and he hadn’t lead them to victory everyone would be asking why he didn’t put Zwick in. In the post game show Demetrius Stanley literally bashed Zwick and called him a terrible QB for half an hour. edit- I wish he would get fired.
In closing I think that this weekend proved that we overrated the Big 10 this year. I am even more certain than ever that we have the talent to run the rest of the schedule and win the Big 10 assuming that someone will beat Purdue and Wisconsin at some point. JT’s play calling isn’t as bad as many people think, just think if we were still going out and running the power I every play? Half of the teams go out and lose every week. It just happened that this was the week that we ran into a team that played a little better than we did. I would like everyone to honestly ask themselves, How many college football teams do you think the Bucks can’t beat? Personally I can’t think of 1. It could be worse, we could all be Michigan fans.
