Police probe U. of Hawaii point-shaving allegation

HONOLULU (AP) - An anonymous letter to the University of Hawaii is raising allegations that football players are involved in a point-shaving scheme, and police are investigating.

The university released a statement Tuesday after KITV was the first to call asking about the probe.

UH President M.R.C. Greenwood says the admissions office received the letter Nov. 3 and university officials immediately alerted Honolulu police and the NCAA.

The letter accuses unnamed players of intentionally playing poorly to affect the final score.

A university spokeswoman declined to say if the letter is referring to Hawaii's current season.

After winning 10 games in 2010, the Warriors are 5-6 this year with two games left in the regular season. They're 3-7-1 against the point spread and have failed to beat the spread in nearly two months.

And my season from hell continues.

The letter accuses unnamed players of intentionally playing poorly to affect the final score.

I've seen some bad UH football this year. It might be hard to tell what's intentional and unintentional.

Bryant Moniz (QB) would be my first guess. Although he's now injured and not playing, he was playing up until the time of the letter. One week he'd play like a Heisman candidate and the next week play like dog shit. Aaron Brown (LB) would be another. One game he's all over the field, playing like he was an all-B1G first-teamer, and the next week virtually disappearing.

UH was up by 21 points in the second half at home to Utah State only to mysteriously fold and lose 35-31 on a TD in the last 14 seconds. Would not surprise me to see that some players were indeed tanking on purpose...

Wonder if the the season ticket holders can somehow file some sort of class action lawsuit against the Hawaii athletic department for purposely putting a bad product on the field and exploiting the fan base for an illegal financial gain.

This could get ugly. A tattoo story won't sound so bad next year after every thing else that's gone down.

Any possibility that the letter is from a fan who is just pissed off that the current team sucks ass and they just can't deal with it so they are trying to make it look like UH is losing on purpose?

Just a thought.

Late-late games with little coverage in on the mainlaind. Less possibility of drawing attention (though Vegas seems to have a good handle on most of these situations).

Late late game of the day is the one most worth it for a fixer. LOTS of bettors chasing losses and going extra big on the last game of the night to get even.

Vegas has been shading lines based on that little bit of behavioral analysis for years and years.

Ten years from now the only story that will be remembered is the tattoo story.

Most people won't remember Cam Newton, North Carolina or Miami and the Sandusky story will be couched as 'being beyond athletics'. The odds of them remembering a scandal from Hawaii...regardless of how big it ends up being....are roughly zero.

Only tOSU fans want to keep referring to it as a "tattoo story". tOSU did not suffer the major stuff because someone got a tattoo, or did not fully pay for a tattoo, or for trading anything for a tattoo. So maybe that is one reason why it will be remembered Muck...it wasn't a "tattoo story".

But it looks like much brighter days ahead. Skunkbears go down to a crushing defeat, new legend hired as tOSU Head Coach, and all that other stuff is in the rear view mirror.
