have you guys ever taken protein shakes?

sorry, stoo, but it is not in all cases. steroids are commonly used for medical purposes. of course, steroids are also used to gain muscle for non-medical purposes, and that is illegal and unethical (unethical in the competitive environment; otherwise, it's just illegal; there's nothing unethical about using it for cosmetic and other similar reasons). again, there are many great uses for steroids that are perfectly legal.

Duh...my dad was on steroids before and after his operation to remove a cencerous brain tumor. Unfortunately, our family is quite aware of the benefits that one can derive from steroids. I'm confident most people understand the difference between steroids prescribed by a physician and one used for gaining an unnatural advantage in sports. My response to Craigblitz was b/c of this line where he endorsed non-medical usage of steroids...

There are several reasons why people may decide to take steroids for non medical reasons and yes it can be done safely.

I've used nitrotech and celltech both in choc and vanilla and both are better than average, yet expensive. EAS has a good low carb shake, my best advice is tuna in spring water 2x a day. cheaper and safer. Remember too much pritein and your liver will not like you.

Then the kid is dumber than I thought for listening to someone on an internet messageboard making a joke.
aren't you a teacher? you'd think that an educator understands how impressionable kids are. perhaps you want to make light of the subject of the abuse of steroids by our youth, but i don't. i don't care if it was a joke or not. i understand poking fun at some things on this board and making light of others. however, when a high school kid starts a thread that asks for advice about gaining muscle, the last thing i want to see is a message that states that anabolic steroids are a sure-fire way to gain muscle... even if it was just sarcasm.

cci, i will not ding you for bringing up that option for a high school kid, but i'd like to ding you.

edit: you probably weren't actually offering it up as an option but instead mentioning it as a tried-and-true way to gain muscle, right?

I have tried em once when I was working out heavy and I seen the diference.

Using roids at your age is the WORST advice ever. At your age you are producing more then enough testosterone that all you need to do is eat, lift and repeat as the other posters have said. Using steroids at your age is not going to kill you etc etc (don't buy all the media BS) but it will affect how much T your body will produce later on. With proper diet, supplementation, etc you can easily reach most of your goals without Roids.

Also before even thinking about using roids there are several other products you would need lined up first... so it is not an option ok. Hit the gym eat lots and rest well.
I was not aware of him being in High School

also, something my health teacher was telling me was about how too much protein can start to hurt you, because protein is not easy to digest and can be hard on your liver. What he was telling me to do, was to eat a lot of carbohydrates before lifting (and still have a decent intake of protein), so that way you will have an energy boost to make it through the weightlifting and to be able to actually work the muscles. Then once you are done (and the boost from the carbs will eventually die down with it) lifting, the protein will start to kick in and your muscles will feed on that to start to grow.

So basically, if you go and take a ton of protein before you lift, you will probably feel sluggish and it could hurt your body. Still have your intake of protein while lifting, just increase your carbohydrate intake to give you the energy to do the actual process of weight lifting.

taking a ton of protein before you lift is definitely not a good idea. there are few lifting gurus who recommend it anyway. yes, taking some moderately high glycemic carbs before you lift is generally a good idea. it will supply the body with ample energy. taking high glycemic carbs afterwards, in conjunction with protein, will also help the body become anabolic and anti-catabolic. taking protein while lifting? i don't see the value in that, even though it will not make you sluggish, that is, unless you take huge quantities of it. taking huge quantities of anything -- carbohydrates, protein, or fat -- before or while you lift will leave you sluggish.

all of this talk about harming your body by taking one gram of protein per pound of body weight is being pennywise and pound foolish. the harm that one will do to his or her body by eating that much protein pales in comparison to the daily barrage of toxins and empty calories ingested by eating foods high in sodium, saturated fats, preservatives, and refined carbohydrates. furthermore, it is arguable whether eating one gram of protein per pound of body weight is that harmful if harmful at all. as with nearly everything out there, there are findings for both sides of the debate.
