good god i love that aircraft. theres just something about it that reminds of the p-47.

The 117s used to fly right over my apartment in college. What I'll never forget was how loud those suckers are. The might not be detectable by radar, but they sure were detectable by ears.

I always thought they looked pretty sweet too!

Dryden may have been joking, but it does make you wonder that if we're retiring the world's stealthiest known -- key word is "known" -- aircraft, then just what do we have waiting in the wings and on the drawing board?

All the new aircrafts in design or being produced have stealth tech. They just don't look like the old stealth that you are used to that were designed in the 70's. Those designs pretty much came from the minds of genius's and trial and error testing. With today's computers, stealth tech can be incorporated without the jagged edges you are used to seeing. Along with stealth tech, such newer planes like the Raptor have thrust vectoring which makes them the most agile fighters in the air. The problem with the Raptor is it costs a ton. That is where the joint forces fighter comes in. It is much more cost effective. No where near the performance as the Raptor, but way less expensive and incorporates the needs of the Air Force, Navy, and Marines (has jump jet tech...no more British made planes for the Marines).
