Taose-a returns from Iraq, carries on family legacy

Entering the Air Force straight out of Taos High School eight years ago, Taose-a Rebecca Romero­Sutton has seen both sides of the war, married a man who is also serving in Iraq, and was forced to leave her infant son behind in the call of duty.
And last Monday (June 1), Staff Sgt. Romero-Sutton finally came home to stay.
?The hardest part was being separated from this one,? Romero-Sutton said, mean­ing her nearly 2-year-old son, Andrew. ?Being deployed, I was physically OK. But emotion­ally and mentally, the void of not having my son around was hard.?
But for Romero-Sutton, being in the Air Force wasn?t just about serving her country, it was also about being another in a long line of family soldiers. Romero-Sutton?s father had already retired from the Army when he joined the National Guard. And many people on Romero-Sutton?s mother?s side of the family were in the mili­tary, which had a big impact on her as a child.
