Does it seem like the Sports Hall of Fames getting watered down by 'forced' nominees?

Why do we HAVE to add someone every year to each HoF?

I agree 100%, it's gotten to the point where every good player is "a future hall of famer" and some of the people being added seem to be there specifically because they need to add someone.

I tend to think of Hall Of Fame players as being the legends of a sport, the Babe Ruth's, etc...

Not a real well thought-out post. Who exactly would be the "etc.s" after Ruth? That would basically leave nobody. How about in hoops? Do we induct Russell and leave out everyone else because of all the titiles he won that no one came close to? But what about Kareem, Wilt, and Mike? What about football? Who gets in? Otto Graham, Jim Brown, maybe Montana. Does Rocky Marciano belong in the Boxing Hall or is he a "etc" behind Ali?

Tha Halls Of Fame are for recognizing the games greatest players. There are only a select few "legends." When I think of "legends" there are two, Ruth and Ali. Gretzky might want to kick my ass on that one but I don't follow hockey. Peace.

Yeah, but I don't see Art Monk in the same baot as Jerry Rice. You have to reinvent/revolutionize/rethink some part of your position. Does Brett Farve get in? Yes, but his stats are average over his career.

I think we can get at least one good player every year. But 5,6,7 players getting in- there isn't 6 hall of famers retiring every year in any sport.

Does Tony Gwynn deserve to have the same respect as Hank Aaron? Not to diss the legends and I realize where I used Babe Ruth I could have just as easily used Reggie Jackson to prove my point, but there's too much BS around the Hall now a-days. "He didn't get in til his third attempt" whereas there's still people who have long since deserved to be in.

Sorry, I don't follow boxing, so I can't debate your point. But as for football, the names you mention are all strong, but do current members compare to Unitas, Montanna, Rice or even Kelly? Does the term "Future hall of famer" get tossed around too much?

Maybe I am too fond of my memories, however, there's been a few people let in over recent years that I question if the hall is really what it should be.

Edit: Sorry if this response is weak, it's 7:45 AM and I havn't had a full cup of coffee yet.

I totally agree, there are deserving people. But the HoF should be a room full of guys that any 10 year old can look up to and say WOW! not huh, he threw how many interceptions.

Case in point- Ray Guy, there is a damned AWARD named after him, but he cant get in the HoF as the best player in his position ever?
Whisky Tango Foxtrot is that?
That is the same as Butkus not getting in, or Lombardi not getting in - and don't say it isnt, THEY were the so called best ever in position and got awards named after them and are in the HoF.

When ranking the top 10 QB's of all time, Skip Bayless had Peyton Manning ranked behind Joe Namath. :slappy: :slappy:

What a mouth breather Bayless is.

Wow that is disturbing. Yeah, Bayless is a total tool. Namath has to be the most overrated quarterback in NFL history. Maybe the most overrated player in NFL history.

Agree.

We had a debate about that sometime back.

Namath actually threw more Int. than TD's I believe.

And it ain't even close...173 TDs and 220 INTs. He threw more TDs and INTs in only 2 of his seasons, and even that was 19/17 and 18/15.

Namath is the most overrated player in sports history...had the Jets not won Super Bowl III Dave Krieg would go into the HOF before Namath.

Your response is NOT weak, and I apolgize for being somewhat rude in replying to your original post. I know what you are trying to say about the watered down Halls. But, then you get circumstances like up here in Cleveland where Gene Hickerson just got in 30+ years after his playing days were over and all did was open the holes for three Hall Of Fame RB's. And he wasn't just "on the line" he WAS the line. Now the poor guy is afflicted with dementia and can't even enjoy it.

Some other observations of mine in tune with your thoughts, How the hell did Roger Wehrli get it? Does Omar Vizquel belong? People are saying that next year will finally be the year for Goose Gossage. How does a guy become more deserving as years go by is what I don't understand. And THAT to me is the bullshit part. They seem to reserve being a "first ballot" player for the easily recognized greats, but it's foolish to say that Let's vote for Ripken and Gwynn this year but wait till next year to vote for Goose.

Part of the problem is that it's these media schlocks voting, particularly in the football case. Anyone can look at a QB's stats and argue all day long about whether they belong in the HOF...but what about a tackle? Or a center? These assclowns, most of whom couldn't even mow a football field, much less play on one, have no real idea what makes a good guard and what doesn't. I mean Randall McDaniel started what, a dozen Pro Bowls in a row, and he didn't even make it to the finalist list this year. Now if a RB or QB started 12 straight Pro Bowls, they would rename the HOF for them. When Howie Long went in in 2000, he made defensive end #7...only #7. There were 7 QBs, I think, by the time the 3rd or 4th class rolled around. My point being that they put the stat guys in, and then seem to wander aimlessly, and be unable to agree, on what makes a good lineman or defensive player. Thus, the Hall os skewed towards a couple of watered down positions. It has been nice to see more of a push for linemen on both sides of the ball in recent years though, so maybe that trend is starting to reverse just a bit. Still, guys like McDaniel who dominated their position for over a decade still have to wait longer than a guy like Jim Kelly, who is a hell of a nice guy but was probably the 6th or 7th best QB during the era he played in...but was a first ballot HOFer.
