Guess who I smoked a Cigar with today?

Folanator

Brawndo's got electrolytes...
Was downtown Cincy today and walked into Cincinnati Tobacconist to kill an hour and buy a cigar and smoke. Bought a Fuente Best Seller and sat down on the lounge chairs and to my surprise I was sitting there with...

Oscar Robinson, Andy Ferman (from WLW radio) and Jeff Ruby (very famous restaurateur. I know Ruby and Andy, have met Oscar a few time before.

It was a fabulous hour of nothing but talking shit with The Big O, Fer-ball and Ruby. Various topics centering on Bearcat BBall, Bobbie H. and a host of other subjects. Nothing earth shattering. Lots of insight on Huggie Bear, some good and lots bad. LOTS of drinking stories. Big O talking about Red Aurback (sp) and the old time BB. He is SOOO old school. Not much respect for many of the players of today. Ruby brought up the fact that some kid broke his record of being the leading scorer 3 years in a row in D1. Oscar asked what school and then Ruby said Southern Florida Baptist or something like that. The big O said "Sheeeet, that small school crap don't count." He laughed his ass off.

Talked about the OSU-Cinci game. They knew all about the '06 fab 5 and kid-ed about us being on Probation. Big O was serious, he did not know we already self-policed but he had a definite opinion anyway.

Anyway, it was a great afternoon. Thought I would share.

Not that I had a lot, but I lost any respect I had for O a couple months ago when he was a guest of Furman's and blew up on a caller for absolutely no reason. He even used the, "You know who I am? You heard of Oscar Robinson?" line. Totally uncalled for. IMO, he's nothing more than a bitter old man trying to hang onto the past.

Was there any talk of Furman and Marty's feud on air earlier this week? I heard someone else say this on Picoro's show the following day and I've always felt this way about him but he may be the most arrogant public figure in Cincinnati.

and what a past that would be to hold on to....

haha but yeah i agree with you, i hate that kind of arrogance that often comes with professional atheletes and people who start to think that they have become a bigger and better human being for what they have accomplished before.

Same here, just b/c you were a great athlete doesn't mean you go to any better place than the rest of us when you die.

I doubt he would have said that, since his name is Robertson.

Don't preach about any respect you might have had for someone of whom you don't even know their name!
He put up with a lot of racist shit when he was at UC, and then in the NBA with the Royals, and always handled himself with class and dignity.
One of the top 3 basketball players of all time, without question.
If the caller was so ignorant that he didn't know who Robertson was, like you, then he shouldn't have been calliing in to express his viewpoint on a radio show.

The Big 'O' once averaged a triple-double for an entire season in the NBA.

1962 - 30.8 ppg, 12.5 rpg, 11.4 apg

But Bill Russell won one of his 5 MVP's that year.

Now, on the other hand, coach the Buckeyes to a few NCs and you gets to move into a better neighborhood once you get there and you can pee over the fence to help Bo put out the constant fires in his front yard.

You know I did not really care about the trash talk. Big O said a bunch of OUTRAGEOUS stuff that was total BS, but who cares? You have to give the man credit for what he did in his life. He is an old guy and they tend to get bitchy. I just listened and did not judge much. The three of them were full of it but they are all personalities. It was just a fun dynamic to be a part of. How often do you get to hang out with a Babe Ruth or Wayne Gretzky?

I had the opportunity to talk to Sam Sneed a few times in Va. Yes he was a class A putz sometimes, but there were other times he was awesome. One time I introduced him to my 2 boys as “the man with the greatest swing in the history of Golf”. He knelt down and talked to those wide eyed boys like they were his own Granchildren. He could not have been nicer. You just do not turn away those opportunities to have life experience like that. These guys are legends for a reason.<O:p</O:p

Mili, being the typical type A, compulsive obsessive triathlete I always have to fight the demons. Cigars are one that I go on and off of every couple of years. I will be dumping them at New Years right after I smoke the Cubans and the Anjo that I have been saving for the Fiesta bowl. I have to start training for Ironman Cours de lane. <O:p</O:p

A few years ago I gave my father in law a 250 humidor almost half full when I gave them up.

No Thump, you cannot have my current humidor.

I think it speaks of itself... that the Big O has possibly the ONLY NBA records I cannot see ANYONE bypassing... the media raves about a triple double for ANY game... forgetaboutit for a week.. a month... a season.. no friggin way...

If my son were there.. I would have instructed him to not let go of the mans leg till he taught you how to hit a jumpshot...

I was impressed... did you ever tell us what cigar you and O had??
