Greg Schiano (HC Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

Yeah, this.

Only negative I could find from this hire, and it's pretty minor, is that the hire might only be a temporary couple of years until he gets another HC gig. I like it. I also wondered what it would mean for guys like Johnson. Would he have any designs on being a DC or Associate HC at some point? I sure as hell don't want to lose that guy!

Awesome job by the staff yet again. Now if we could just find us a new OC........
I would suspect that if he keeps the Bucks' D playing at a high level, he'd get offers and likely jump to being a HC again. And that's fine. When others are poaching your coordinators to be their HC, you're doing something right. It's when nobody wants to touch your guys that you need to worry. Continuity is great, but it's very rare in big-time CFB anymore. You just do your due diligence and try to replace them as best you can. Like with this very hire.

As for Johnson, he'll be 64 next year. I doubt he's going anywhere at this point.

That's at least as big of a problem, if not more so, with young up and coming guys, IMO.

Like, say, Chris Ash, for instance.

I'm sure it was discussed in the interviews and Meyer and Schiano have an agreed upon plan.

I think that "two and done" will be the norm now for every Ohio State OC or DC - either they will get an HC job in two years or be fired for lack of performance.

This article pretty much sums up why his personality isn't for every program and he is better suited for college than the NFL. Can't wait to see Coach Schiano out there leading our defense. Question: who deals with the DBs now?

Schiano has a background with DBs...5 years as DB coach at Ped Aggy in the 90's and a year as the Bears DB coach in the NFL before becoming DC at duh u.

Interesting tidbit from the SI article on the hire:

Schiano and Meyer are close friends both personally and professionally. They got to know each other after years of spending time together on the annual Nike trips. Meyer considers Schiano one of his closest friends, and Schiano is expected to help Meyer as a veteran sounding board for running the program. Schiano took a handful of trips to Columbus to observe practices and talk with the defensive coaches there during the past two years. Meyer’s background is on the offensive side of the ball, so he’d often pick Schiano’s brain about defense. (Patriots coach Bill Belichick is another Schiano confidant who speaks with him frequently.)

I was unaware he and Meyer were that close.

Heck of a hire. I believe the Bucks have played against a Schiano lead defense before?

Yessir. He was DC at Miami from 1999-2000. They beat us in the Kickoff Classic to start that year and their massive winning streak that ended with us beating them in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl (I believe that is correct... we started and ended their streak).

Schiano is a superstar hire. Can't wait to see what he can do in NJ and southern Florida on the recruiting trail. Can't imagine he'll be here long (ala Herman & Ash), but he's going to make an impression.

The million dollar question though... can he call plays on O?? 8D
