Pounding out aggression, turns into obsession
Okay, so I've heard a lot of people mention that this was the greatest Buckeye game of all time. I know there have been lots of discussion in the past, but this got me thinking about my top 5 Buckeye games (in person or on TV). By the way, I'm too lazy to look up the exact scores and years, but I'm sure you'll remember most of these games.
Honorable Mention - OSU vs. Purdue (2002), OSU vs. ASU (1997 Rose Bowl), OSU vs. PSU (1995), OSU vs. Iowa (1985), OSU vs. Michigan (1979)
5 - OSU vs. Minnesota (1989?) - OSU was down by 3 million points at halftime. Okay, maybe I'm fibbing a little. I think it was something like 31-3. Greg Frey fought back (bald head and all), and threw a TD with a little over a minute to take a 3 or 4 point lead...let's say it was 38-34? Anyways, the OSU prevent nearly lost the game as Minnesota marched down and had a throw into the endzone as time expired. Yikes. I think at the time, this was the largest come back in Div 1 history.
4 - OSU vs. Michigan (2005) - no need to elaborate. If you missed it, you can tune in to ESPN Classic in two days.
3 - OSU vs. LSU (1988?) - LSU went up by 2 scores in the 4th quarter when a pass bounced off a receivers hands and landed in another one's. The Buckeyes drove down the field twice (sound familiar) and scored their second TD on a slant route to Bobby Olive in the North endzone to win the game.
2 - OSU vs. Michigan (2002) - Michigan dominated the first half with huge drives and tons of 3rd down conversions. Bucks hold them to FG's. When it was all on the line (The Game, Big 10 Title, and NC), Bucks get the drive of the year with a Schnitker INT of a pass to Jenkins, MoC wheel route, and an option to Hall. Then, the interception as time expired! Wow! Of course, it helps that I was there to soak it all in.
1 - OSU vs. Miami (2003 Feista Bowl) - I've said it before and I'll say it again...Hollywood can't do it better. The #1 offense and the #1 defense. The MoC strip. The huge Miami punt return when it was ABSOLUTELY needed. The tipped FG by Wilhelm that somehow went through as time freaking expired. The 4th and 14. The call. The MoC TD. The hit on Dorsey. The 4th and 5 for Miami. The 1st and goal (remember: #1 offense and #1 defense). The 2nd and goal. The 3rd and goal. The 4th and goal. The 5 minutes of disbelief.......what did I just witness. The staying up until 8am to watch it all over again.
So, there you have it. I'd say this was NOT the greatest game of all time. I'd say it was the 4th greatest...which is still pretty fucking good.
