Very early in life, Harper displayed skills years ahead of other children his age and was labeled a prodigy. By the age of eight, Harper began preparing for college level courses; at the age of ten he enrolled in Muskingum College in his native New Concord, Ohio; and at the age of fourteen he graduated from Muskingum. In 1872, Harper enrolled in Yale University to begin his post graduate studies, which he completed in 1876. Throughout his academic life, Harper wrote numerous texts. A strong supporter of life long learning, Harper was also involved with the Chautauqua Institute and its programming.

Harper college is in Palatine, Illinois - very close to me.

John Curtis Estes (August 3, 1944 ? March 13, 1988) better known as John Holmes, John C. Holmes or Johnny Wadd (after the lead character in a series of related films), was one of the most famous male adult film stars of all time, appearing in about 2,500 adult loops, stag films, and porno feature movies in the 1970s and 1980s, including at least one gay feature film and a handful of gay loops. He was best known for his exceptionally large, uncircumcised penis, which was heavily promoted as being the longest in the porn industry; its exact dimensions are, however, uncertain and the subject of controversy. Holmes also attracted notoriety for his involvement in the brutal Wonderland Murders in 1981, and for his death from AIDS.

Born in Ashville, Pickaway County, Ohio, as John Curtis Estes, Holmes knew very little of his father Carl Estes, a railroad worker, who walked out on the family when John was three or four years old. John's mother Mary, a devout Southern Baptist, married Harold Holmes a few years later and changed the family's surname to Holmes. His new stepfather proved to be a violent alcoholic who would come home inebriated, stumble about the house, and even vomit on the children. Mary Holmes later divorced him, and moved to Columbus, Ohio, with her children where they lived on welfare for a few years. When John was age eight, his mother met and married her third husband, Harold Bowman. They moved from Columbus and settled in nearby Pataskala, Ohio. After a few years of marriage, Bowman frequently beat Holmes, the youngest of four children, according to Sharon Holmes.[1]

Running as VP for a segregationist aside...Curtis deserves to be here-he was a Buckeye and and an alum of Columbus-East as well...

You're related to Armstrong, eh? Cool. How closely?

I will say, though, I was kind of hoping it was Manson.

Of course, I apparently forgot the sarcasm font when I included Manson as "Great." My bad...

Ooops! My apologies for dinging you Peach!
I guess I'll have to make that one up! :(

Distant relative. If he's the first man on the moon, then he's relation; if he's a Manson (or Dahmer, Sushi ), then there's no way he's related.

Thurber and The New Yorker.......................
http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2003/09/08/030908crat_atlarge

The New Yorker was the turning point, the crucial element, in Thurber?s life, just as he was a crucial element in the magazine?s development. But at the start no one knew quite what to do with him. Ross, as always, was in search of an administrative editor who could, through some arcane magic, make sense of the chaos that he thrived on, hiring a procession of young men ill-equipped to fill this slot??Hell, I hire anybody??then quickly dumping them. Given his anarchic spirit, Thurber was undoubtedly the least plausible of these luckless candidates. Besides, he knew that he was first, last, and always a writer. Ross persisted, though, and Thurber was kept busy rewriting and processing other writers? copy, being paid a small salary without extra compensation for any pieces of his own that found their way into the magazine.
From the beginning, his model as a writer?and Ross?s?was White, for the clarity, precision, and intelligence of his prose. And Andy White went from being a colleague (who told him frostily ?I always eat alone?) to a pal to a friend to (almost) a soul mate. It was White who literally picked up Thurber?s discarded drawings of men, women, and dogs (and the famous seal) from the floor and forced them down the collective throat of the art department. But though Thurber and White wrote a book together?the successful ?Is Sex Necessary?,? in 1929?they were very unalike. Thurber was gregarious, a prankster (Ross invariably fell for his fake phone calls in bizarre accents), almost a rowdy; White was cautious, dispassionate. As one contemporary friend put it, ?Andy was fearful of life. Jim was warm and involved with life.? Nevertheless, they made a formidable, and happy, team. These early years of The New Yorker, when the course of the magazine was being set by the Founding Fathers (the two young men, together with Ross and Wolcott Gibbs and a few others) plus the Founding Mother (Katharine Angell, who was to marry White), became for Thurber, in retrospect, a golden age.

At first, he was writing Talk of the Town as well as humor?he wrote hundreds of Talk pieces in all, industriously making more out of less, and not unfrequently something out of nothing. (Typical starts to his Talk pieces from the late twenties: ?The new Reptile Hall was officially opened a few days ago in the Museum of Natural History and we visited it amidst a group of youngsters who kept crying ?Good night!? and their mothers who kept murmuring ?Mercy!? ? And ?Older residents around Gramercy Park were astonished to find one night in April no lights in Allaire?s. A padlock hung on the hospitable doors of the famous old bierhalle.?) He went on turning out this kind of thing until the mid-thirties, but by then the two main preoccupations of his writing career had emerged: the relations between men and women, and the remembrance of his past.

However, you may actually raise your IQ by doing so! (if that's possible)
