Graham Mertz (QB Wisconsin, transfer to Florida)

Has such a good base when he throws... make it look easy.

He does; a good wide base, really helps him amp up the power with his still slight frame.

Was really impressed with his athleticism, kid moves around so well and always keeps his eyes down field....rare for a youngster. Very good anticipation....only thing that is a red flag early on is the Kansas competition, but apparently his Elite 11 performance puts that to bed.

Did not know we were leading in CB's for this particular commited QB...seems strange
Why does it seem strange?
There was a time(before he eventually decommitted) that UF was leading in CBs for Emory Jones last year. Happens all the time when there is a strong instinct that a kid may flip
There’s also only 6 predictions- it’s not like a lot of people have weighed in.

2 for Ohio State, 2 for Minnesota, 1 for Wisconsin, 1 for Notre Dame (Tom Loy  ).

The most recent change (other than Loy’s ignorable homerism in April) was in February.

Bottom line, this isn’t one where you can read a lot into the crystal ball predictions at the moment.

There is definitely smoke, though.

Whenever OSU puts the full court press on in recruiting, there will always be smoke

ZEROING IN: FOUR-STAR BADGER COMMIT GRAHAM MERTZ THE FOCAL POINT OF OHIO STATE'S 2019 QUARTERBACK SEARCH

93650_h.jpg

If you've had some difficulty keeping up with Ohio State's 2019 quarterback recruiting, then you have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. The Buckeyes have seemingly hopped from target to target, offer to offer, and the picture is still quite hazy as it pertains to the most important position on the field.

We've mentioned this multiple times, but it bears repeating once again: the 2019 class is not a good when it comes to quarterback play. Also worth mentioning again: Ohio State is going to take a quarterback this cycle.

Dwayne Haskins is entering his redshirt sophomore season and Tate Martell is a redshirt freshman. Matthew Baldwin is bouncing back from a torn ACL in his first season in Columbus. The departure of Joe Burrow was hardly a lethal blow to the position, but it has led to a bit of inexperience at quarterback.

Last month we took a look at the murky 2019 quarterback picture. To say that things have changed since then would be a vast understatement.

There's a lot of uncertainty at the position right now, but I think if there's one thing that most can agree on it's probably that Grant Gunnell is the top target on the board. He's currently uncommitted and has already taken his official visit to Ohio State. A decision is expected this summer, but it's hardly a done deal to the good guys.

If I could turn back time – and if I could find a wayyyyyy – I'd probably word things in a slightly different fashion. It's true; it did seem as though Gunnell was the guy the staff had locked in on. There was a window of time when things seemed to be done and the Texan was all but delivered to Ohio State.

And then some strange things happened. The Buckeyes turned up the heat elsewhere, extended new offers, and Grant Gunnell pledged to his old friend Kevin Sumlin and the Arizona Wildcats. So now, with the summer months upon us, it may be safe to take another stab at who the Buckeyes are focusing on at quarterback.

Wisconsin commit Graham Mertz is a player that Ohio State identified early on as the four-star actually earned an offer a month before the aforementioned Gunnell. He's been there all along, we probably just haven't been talking about him enough because of his status as a Wisconsin pledge.

The country's No. 5 pro-style passer has been a Badger commit since last October. Can the Buckeyes flip another Big Ten quarterback commit much like they did with Haskins in 2016?

and it all starts to make sense, I was just not brushed up on my football recruiting like I normally am this time of year, last I heard Gunnell looked to be the guy so when I checked in to see that he was off the board naturally I looked to see if we had a shot at any other QB's and I saw Mertz but he was commited to Wiscy, but we had 33% of the CB's, so I didn't really know what to think, but glad to know Urban and crew are on it.

Just sayin': He looked pretty good Friday night too:

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Fields recorded the second-best single-game completion percentage (95.2) in league history, tying with Wisconsin's Graham Mertz, who also completed 20 of 21 passes Friday against Illinois.

What in the world could a QB see in Wisconsin to make them want to commit more than a year early?
Gus Johnson spoke to this ver y question last night: you know you’ll play behind a great O- line several of whom will make it to the NFL. You’ll know you’ll have a good running back the other team will have to respect and that will keep them from being able to key in on you. You’ll know you will be well coached.

I don't know, I think I'd have to side with cinci on this one. Seems like Cheese gets the most out of their 2 and 3 star kids more so than any other program every year. Whether it's coaching or just their system, they seem to be in the mix (at least in the B1G) every year.

If you are a young, talented 4/5* QB, if you can be the piece that puts the cherry on top, why not? A passing game and the ability to push the ball down the field makes Wisc a difficult team to defend. You can't just sell out on the run like OSU has been able to do for years.

Before we start anointing Wisky and this kid, I realize that he played a great game but. Lets see what they do against a decent defense. There are very few QBs in the world, throughout time that have been able to play at a high level with average to below average receivers. Wisky’s WRs are a weak link...
