The .tv extension in particular is no longer a country code, since the Tuvalu government leased it back to a US company (VeriSign) for a 20% stake.

Second level domains -> Top level registrars -> Regional registrars -> IANA -> ICANN -> US Dept of Commerce

It's our system, we own it all.

What will most likely happen is these sites will take refuge in mass-mirroring with temporary domain names and be stronger than they were before they got shut down. Wikileaks, for example, went from having a few dozen mirrors to having 1,400 by December once the government targetted it for removal.

ehhh, it's not Obama. they did it under Bush too, the overall administration in power doesn't usually get involved in this crap.

It's people who are both doing their job and not understanding how the internet actually works.

All of the sites that get shut down are usually back up with a different domain name within a week (in atdhe.net's case, less than 24 hours)

Anyone who rebroadcasts anything copyrighted, whether it's TV, film, or music, will be targetted. Leeching is a non-factor, they've always gone after the people who host files for sharing.

Good to know that Immigrations and Customs Enforcement is going after the real threats to our national security ... people that run Web sites that are nothing more than walls of links to other Web sites. :shake:
