Not one to blow my own horn, but ran 5:45 consistently in 8th grade. Remember running a 5K in 21 min. in 5th garde in reebok hightops. Guess I missed my calling. 5ft size 9 freshman year, 6 ft size 13 senior.
I always thought we should have been chasing a rabbit or something while running track.:banger:

I remember back in high school the basketball coach made us run the mile the last night of conditioning. You had to run it under 6 minutes or he considered you not to be in shape (he was an ex-Marine). He was also our golf coach and our golf season lasted until the last week of conditioning. He told us to take a couple of days off and then come out for the last day of the conditioning program. Imagine our surprise when we arrived that everyone must make the six minute barrier or be forced to start out the year on the junior varsity. Most of the guys had been in conditioning for a couple of weeks (run by the assistant coaches) and the most I did was walk up and down fairways for the last two months. The last day we had to run around the road that borders the school twice which coach said was a mile. Of course we bitched to the coach that us golfers really were not in shape, but he didn't care saying "I know you boys can do it, you just have to focus mind over your body." Well our group (4 golfers) decided to run together and near the end of our second lap he is yelling out the times, 5:51, 5:52 etc. I know we were about hundred yards out and had to cover the distance in ten seconds in order to make the cut-off. I know he saw us coming in and it seemed time stood still as I covered the last 100 yards in 8 seconds according to coach's yelling of the time. I think he deliberately counted slower in order for us to make it. My time officially was 5:58, unofficially probably 6:10.
After the run the sadistic bastard made us shoot free throws and for every miss you had to run the stairs. We each had to shoot three free throws and my arms we so heavy from running I didn't hit the rim once. In fact my nearest air ball was still 2-3 feet away from the rim.

I am surprised only one person made the time for an "A". We probably had a least dozen guys out of 30 make it under 6 minutes that night. Of course we didn't have to contend with asthma. I have asthma now and couldn't run a mile in six days....:)

Exactly why I took up golf.

To the original question, I think the scale is pretty fair. 6:20 is a pretty good time for someone who isn't a runner, but a 7:10 is certainly achievable for the masses to get a B.

An A for a 10:00 mile in that other class is pretty sad. It's not a terrible time for someone who hasn't run before, but I wouldn't call it an A.

How long does it take to walk a mile 15 minutes? Any healthy high schooler who can't run a 10 minute mile needs to be put down. I was fat and out of shape in HS and still ran an 8 minute mile.

So wait a minute you are trying to tell me that none of you had any idea that this was going to be your final? You just walked into class and he was like, okay run and mile....and it's for your final grade? I highly doubt that is how it went down. And if it was a medical condition that forced your time to be slower then you should have talked to him before or after, it should be in your school records somewhere about it. I bet that english teacher that doesn't like you is behind this in some way.

I'm with the fool on this one. Combine my serious doubt that comes from anything TG says with the fact that high school kids always lie about things that happen in school, and I bet there's some truth stretching going on.

plus, the sun was probably in his eyes

I don't think an 8 minute mile is bad. I know everyone here on BP can run a 4 minute mile  but I joined the military right after high school and let me tell you, there were not many people that could even run an 8 minute mile.

The military standard for males is that they have to run 2 miles in under 17 minutes (I don't remember the exact time but it was around 16:50). This was just to pass. In basic training where 99% of the kids there were straight out of high school, many of them couldn't even pass this standard until our 3rd or 4th week in. You also have to consider how much training they had in that 3 or 4 week period just to pass.

Being a female in the military I had to run two miles in under 19 minutes. I couldn't even pass this when I first got there. By the time I graduated basic training and went on to AIT (job training) I could run the 2 miles in just under 16 minutes. That was with more than 8 weeks of constant training.

Good try Teddy Swim Team. I think your teacher had unrealistic expectations.

I'm about 5'10", and 174 pounds, and just ran the mile recently for gym class. I had absolutely no preparation and ran it in 6:15. I haven't started my conditioning training for football yet, and have reallyonly been lifting weights, nothing to do with running.

Back in the day at Centerville one of the gym teachers was the head football coach and for gym class there were different things you had to do such as bench press, leg press, rope climb, jump rope, mile, etc . . . you got points on how much of what you did and in the mile you got the most points for miles under either 545 or 600 can not remember which. So I think under a 7 or 8 to get an A is pretty easy but what else do you expect from Columbus public education, show up and don't cause trouble and here is your diploma.

For a male, age 17-21, to pass the 2 mile run.....he must complete the event in 15:54 to receive bare minimum passing score of 60 points. So, at an 8:00 mile pace, a 17-21 year old male would fail the APFT in the US Army. Now, if you start talking older age groups, then yes...time is added with age. Females of the same age group (17-21) have 18:54 in order to pass with 60 points.

Damn Teddy, what happened... coach outlaw your fairy wings?

I can remeber our football coach making the whole team run under 8 around the track, in cleats (did I mention "uphill"?). Only a couple of the fat guys didn't make it.

I think the best I had was a 4:47, of course that was about 110 - 115 pounds and 20 years ago.

I typed that 6:50 out incorrectly but I did mean 16:50. I haven't been in the military for 5 years so my memory is off.

Would you agree that during basic training many of these kids couldn't even pass those times?
