being out of shape and tired almost always leads to playing defense solely by reaching. when kaleb fouled perkins' eye/fro, what i noticed most was how he gave up after the lunge. he was past the point of breaking down and turning around. kaleb still has a lot of flabby, floppy weight. sully was about the same size, but he wasn't jello. though not a great defender, he still defended with his lower half. nick ward was not dissimilar as a high school senior or college freshman. it's still going take another spring and summer before kaleb is fit enough to play 25+ minutes without fouling out. wesson and banks certainly have their work cut out for them.Caleb Wesson needs to learn how to play defense. What is with the slapping crap? He slaps every time he tries to block a shot - and gets called for the foul. Do we not have someone who can help him? Put Oden on the payroll and teach him how to block without fouling.
agreed. for all the talk about matta's teams' lack of desire/focus/whatever, a loss like last night happened only once last season. they were "in" pretty much every game. the '15 season had multiple horrible losses, but '14 had only one.but that is no excuse for this team's composure to crumble as badly as it apparently did in several stretches. That's a recipe for an embarrassing season. Hoping Holtmann and staff grab the reins a bit harder next time things start to spiral.
Hoping we can salvage something good from this trip to Portland. Don't feel super optimistic given that the team gets less than a day turn-around from an utter beat-down.
Not to mention Lyle. I didn't get to watch the game but it sounds like we were just outclassed by a better team. Hope to see this team improve and grow. They had Trevor Thompson last season. There is no comparison between the talent they had manning the paint defensively last year and yesterday.
For someone who gripes about complaints about Matta from fans now, you do a great job of inviting criticism of Matta with your constant, proactive defense of him. He was not directly under attack in this thread, you just brought him into the discussion with the implication that any shortcomings of this team aren't his fault. Matta was in fact fired for poor recruiting and the current team was essentially his creation - to suggest otherwise is off the mark. This season's team was never going to be a special one regardless of who the coach was. As OSU basketball fans, all we can really hope for is improvement year over year, a win or two extra each year until the program gets back to being a contender for the B1G title and S16+.i suspect some fans are becoming harbaugh-type ttun fans. for the first 3+ seasons, every issue will be laid at the previous coach's feet and every positive will be due to the new coach. just wait until ho1tmann gets his players...

i agree. i just see some who seek to paint seemingly every positive as caused by ho1tmann and every negative as a reflection of matta. it's not that simple. this is the type of thinking up north we note and make fun of. weighing everything you see against wholly different rosters rather than, as you point out, what you see from game one this season to march will fester and mislead. matta was a good coach with obvious imperfections. like it or not, this is and will be the case with ho1tmann... just in different ways.Well, you can't really fault the roster issues on the current coach. you definitely have to give him a couple of years for that.
Now, as for getting the most out of players and teaching the game, we should see improvement during the year. If we look the same at the end of january and february like we did last night, then the coach would need to shoulder some blame. Obviously Potter isn't a great player right now, but when you only have 1 center on roster who is still working on conditioning, then you are going to have some problems against a team with size.
I know you posted this before the Butler game so I will forgive you.Well, you can't really fault the roster issues on the current coach. you definitely have to give him a couple of years for that.
