Gonna toot the ole Joe Hall horn for a minute...

Today I entered my first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tourney. Only been training 2.5 months, got my first stripe (promotion) already, based primarily on my wrestling knowledge. I went to the tourney today and weighed in at 227 (for those of you keeping track, 39 pounds less than January 1st) and competed in the white belt division 215-230 lbs.

In my first fight, I had a member of Team Jorge Gurgel, I took him down off a single leg and got side control immediately.( I am up 3-0) I secured a full mount (up 7-0) then when nothing emerged I went back to side control, locked in a keylock/Americana and almost accidentally tore the guys shoulder apart. Tapout in 2:30.

In my second fight I encountered a guy who was about 6'5, and me being 5'9 I expected to have some problems. I scored a takedown and side control off a countered shot (up 5-0) then got a little sloppy and he almost took my back, then transitioned to (and almost got) an armbar. I fought out, gide my side control back and locked in a kimura. With less than 3 seconds left I earned the tap (Kinda ticked I wanted to just stall the match out). Tapout 4:57.

In the finals I got another guy from Jorge Gurgel. This guy looked to be the best of the field. Big strong, athletic (everything I am not) guy. He scored a takedown and side control early putting me down 2-0. I at first panicked, but then relaxed. As he tried to get knee on belly control (to work towards full mount) I was able to sweep him into side control. I didn't get points for the sweep since I didn't use my legs, so I slid into full mount (4-2 me) and locked in an arm triangle. I switched off from that to another keylock and got the tap at around 2 minutes.

I took first place and am extremely excited. I have found something that makes me happy, and has helped me rediscover some joy in life that I haven't had in a while. I enjoy training in BJJ more than I did in wrestling, and wrestling was/is my first true athletic love.

Ok I'm done.
