Going Vista... Advice?

There isn't a single person I have talked to that made the switch that doesn't say "I wish I would have done this years ago."
I made the exact same statement to Jake in his upgrading his laptop thread.

Didn't work out so well ... :hatepc:

I think the main problem is people think OSX is so different to learn. They also think that they are paying so much more for it. If they took the time to look at all the software they get with it they would realize that it is actually cheaper. Not to mention, security and the fact I don't run any antivirus with OSX.

When I had windows I used nothing but pirated software. With OSX I don't have a single piece of pirated software. They make such quality apps, and make it so affordable that you want to pay for it.

There isn't a single person I have talked to that made the switch that doesn't say "I wish I would have done this years ago."

While I understand you mac dorks feel the need to spread the gospel of a system which doesn't really fit any sort of business model. Let me go back to why I started this thread:

1) I am a PC Tech, I work on PC's, I fix PC's, I build PC's, hell, I hate Mac's so much I found a firmware replacement for my ipod.

2) I have to support office, windows, and quite a few other apps that all run in a PC environment.

3) I build, manage and maintain a windows network.

So, while you somehow try to sell me on the superiority of your Mac, I will tell you about the fact that Windows pays my bills, something Mac's don't do. Hell, I don't even support the iPhone at the office, it's blackberry or nothing.

Once Mac can actually get a real presence in the business world, I am sure you will see more virus's, more exploits and more people who feel the need to actually find the issues with the system.

so you would rather do your customers a disservice and not offer them the best product available? It took microsoft what? 10 years or so to release an updated OS, which then turns out to be the biggest over-bloated pos? Their next product windows 7 is nothing but a lame new name for Vista?

I can agree if you're into gaming OSX isn't the best route to go just yet, but that is more the game makers fault rather than apple.

I made the switch because I too wanted a new computer but didn't want to pay for Vista, and didn't see why I should have to buy a product in XP that I have had for years. Apple products be it the ipod, iphone, OSX, Airports, monitors, ect. are all far supperior to any MS product out there.

Microsoft is a joke of a company and I really hope they can get their shit together so Apple doesn't become the next MS.

Mac has zero traction or room to talk in terms of gaming, pricing... and very little justification for traditional office settings.

Conversely, Microsoft is far behind Mac in ease of use, aesthetics, high end multimedia work and quality.

Windows 2000 came out in 2000, XP Came out in 2002-2003, Vista came out in 2006, where's this 10 year crap come from? I also get security updates, service packs and various addons for my OS on a regular basis. Sorry, I am a pretty high end tech guy, if you know how to properly use windows it's not a problem. Microsoft releases their OS's when the hardware makes the next jump, Apple does the same damned thing, that's why they moved from risc based processors over to Intel, the processor technology was moving faster.

The MacPro is using Xeon processors, the same processors I have been using in my servers for 10 years. Essentially, your new desktops are using hardware based for a server, that's not at all cost effective.

I priced out my pc, it's going to run me 3 grand, 8 gigs of memory, a terrabyte of hard drive space, quad core processor, dual 22" monitors and a friggin 32" Sharp Aquos HDTV for my media. I don't see the price issue at all.

Ipod is decent.

iPhone has a long way to go. Let me know when it stops dropping calls, starts sending video messages and has a copy and paste feature, then after that, let me know when they finally rip off blackberry and steal their push-mail feature. Microsoft makes an OS for portable devices, blackberry is the way to go though.

OSX only survives because Apple whines until Microsoft developes Office, Internet Explorer and whatever real application to keep it alive.

Microsoft has integrated the Xbox360 really well with the system, with my Windows Media Center edition it's turned my whole house into a compact media environment, from any room in the house I can access my music, videos, etc... including my entertainment center.

If everything is so superior why the hell did apple through a 6 year bitch fit about the fact that office wasn't available for the Mac?

Microsoft is a joke of a company and I really hope they can get their shit together so Apple doesn't become the next MS.
Microsoft has a far superior back end with Exchange, Windows Server, SQL Server, and many other back office applications. Trust me, the troubles with Vista are two fold, users used to XP, and Microsoft trying to make it so idiots don't destroy their PC's with every Virus and trojan they run across.

Any knowledgable user can do a lot with windows, and still have all the options a Mac provides.

We can go back and forth, I asked for advice on hardware specs for a Vista Ultimate machine, not to hear someone tell me about Macs.

Ok, I have my problems with the ipod, the fact it isn't just drag over like a hard drive irritates me, but when I changed to the rockbox open source firmware I got what I wanted. Apples friggin DRM and Itunes is the biggest downfall, I keep my music on a portable drive, I want to add songs, forget to turn on the drive, hit sync when I drag stuff over from my regular hard drive, get to work, I have 1 album on my ipod....

I would disagree strongly but...

My last job, I was a photoshop/illustrator graphics designer as well as webmaster for this company called Microtech. I used a Mac G3, for all my graphics work, it was more effective than a PC, and faster in it's applications, however, I can do the same stuff on my pc. I still do a lot of photoshop stuff, granted, I haven't touched illustrator in years and hope never to again, but the option is there and the program isn't any different. I am also curious how the performace is without the multitrhreaded risc based processor.

I fart in your general direction.

Glad to hear you stopped letting the man keep you down (it never ceases to amaze me how many common sayings have sexual origins or connotations).

The performance aspect has improved since then, but moreso, there is a handful of specialized software and general environments that simply work better on a Mac for heavy duty use. Some programs are ported to PC, but like video games and PC software going the other direction, there are often bugs and qwirks which ruin the experience.

Many fo my programmer friends prefer working on a macbook as well, but that's another ball of wax.

Everything you spray bounces off of me back...err.... :sick1:

I'm typing this from my Vista PC, with my 360 on in the background, and an XP laptop in the other room. Someday I'll be able to splurge, but for now I'll keep using the cost-effective solution over the blissful nirvana of computing :p

And this is all you need to say. I have specific rigs for their tasks. I have my PC, which has XP Pro, Vista and Gentoo. XP I have for daily use, benching, gaming (unless its a DX10 title, in which I use Vista) then Gentoo as the workstation.

I have a macbook for my classes and multimedia. It comes out of sleep ready to go and doesnt give me issues. I wouldnt replace it for a laptop if you paid me.

There are things that just work for their paticular situations, and apple products have their niche.

I understand, windows is good business for a computer repairman. I wouldn't want to hear about a product that works either. :slappy::slappy::slappy:

I'm pretty sure I've previously posted the rate of WinX86 vs Mac service tickets I handled as a support tech.

Sorry but Macs don't win the reliability war.

That's because the UNIX underpinnings make them feel all gooshy inside.
