I shook his hand once in a line after he gave a talk at Ohio State. I idolized the early astronauts, and he was our Ohio astronaut among the first seven. His image was that he was a very hard core conservative, but he seemed very interested in youth and trying to understand the hippie movement. Still, I was surprised that he was with Robert F Kennedy when Kennedy was assassinated.

He sure as hell was a tough cookie. Nine days in a space shuttle at 77? Dude!

He wasn't an OSU grad, but was a great supporter of all things Ohio. I agree...Godspeed!
