Ginn, Zwick, Smith and Snyder by Tressel

He also blew the 2003 Wisconsin game almost single handedly by getting burnt deep in my opinion. He has huge athletic ability, no doubt about it, but I think his skills at cornerback were still a little raw, at least from time to time. It seemed like he would be a lock down man for nine plays, and then on one he would blow an assignment like in the Wisconsin game. Also, it's possible that he blew more assignments than that, he just recovered from them with his athletic ability (closing speed, quickness, and so on) so no one noticed, except maybe the coaches.

After all, he did only have one and a half years under his belt at the position, so blown assignments would be expected as far as I'm concerned. It's my feeling that it would have been wise for him to stay an extra year to refine his skills. But obviously the Panthers thought that he was good enough for them to work with and build on.

I didn't see him play with the Panthers very much, but I'm pretty sure he started for them. My feeling is he got drafted for his raw athletic ability, and they worked with him on his skills at cornerback. (Which he could have done at Ohio State, only for free, so who could blame him I guess.)

Gamble, I believe, led the NFL in interceptions last season. If he didn't lead, then he had plenty-o-ints.

Is this a joke? I'm not enough of a regular to know.

As far as Gamble goes, I thought he was the key to reaching the Fiesta Bowl in 2002. That defense reached a new level with him in the starting line-up. His part-time ints against Cincinnati and Wisconsin were key, and who knows what happens in the PSU game. Besides, he shut down an entire side of the field and allowed our dominating line to pressure the QB.

However, I agree that he wasn't really missed on offense. If you remember, he nearly fumbled his biggest catch of the season (57 yarder in the Fiesta Bowl), and he could have/should have caught the famous Pass Interference Play (Jenkins would have caught it!).

Then there was 2003. What a freaking disappointment Gamble was that year. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't bad. He just wasn't great, which is what I expected. He blew cover in the Wisconsin game, he dropped the easiest interception ever in the OT of the Purdue game (it would have ended the game), and he was non-existent on offense. His shining moment would have been his Michigan INT in the 4th quarter if the Bucks managed a TD to tie it. Also, he lucked into a key INT in the Fiesta Bowl that year. Other than that, it was a pretty ho-hum year.

Gamble blew coverage in the Wisky game, Shawn Springs blew coverage in the Michigan game.......so what? One play does not make a game.

Has their been better CB's than Gamble? Yes. Unfortunately he was thrust upon the position due to the lack of quality depth at CB. He used his raw athletism to make plays, technique wise he was lacking. If Underwood would have panned out and not gotten injured we may have never seen Gamble at CB.

Ginn has the talent to go both ways, but will probably only see situational duties at CB. He is much MUCH more explosive on offense and special teams than Gamble was.

You just listed the turning points in each game as a single play.

One play can and does make a game.

Did the Holy Buckeye - one play - make the game?

Did Mike Doss blowing coverage against Seth Morales make the game?

Did Gamble's INT return for a TD against PSU make the game?

I think we can all agree that Gamble was not what we hoped he would be on offense. But wouldn't it be fair to say that the guy could have been tired??? He was on the field for 85% of the plays (offense, defense and special teams). I don't know how we could ask anyone to go 110% for every play when you are on the field that much. Noone has that much gas in the tank.

HOWEVER, I lost a lot of respect for him when he played half-assed in the second half of the fiesta bowl in 03' b/c he didn't want to risk getting hurt for the NFL.

Good points, thanks for stating the obvious.

My point is you cannot go back in history and base someone's career and ablilty on one single play. Yeah, those were huge plays from a negative standpoint, but so were the many big ones that they made throughout their careers.

Scarlet, I see the point you are trying to make, we are seeing on different levels here. Yes, I to understand that throughout history there are certain plays that make a game. But there over a 100 other plays in a game that lead up to that moment. If a guy isn't doing shit and pulls a big play out of his ass, yes I'll give him props, but will never hold him at the level of a Chris Gamble or a Shawn Springs.

I think your heading off in a different direction, I just wanted to stop you before you went too far. :wink2:
