It will be interesting with the new playoffs. I wonder how many teams will do enough to make sure they make it and then step on the pedal from there. I think Georgia will be just fine. Not with our schedule I fear
Georgia football: Court documents allege recruiting staffers of drinking and driving, per report
Court documents in the ongoing lawsuit against the University of Georgia Athletic Association state that multiple UGA football recruiting staff members routinely drove rented vehicles after consuming alcohol, per ESPN’s Mark Schlabach. Attorneys also alleged in an amended complaint that Georgia assistant coaches used cash to pay for recruiting expenses during unofficial recruiting visits — a potential NCAA rules violation.
The amended complaint holds that Georgia coaches and supervisors, in effect, encouraged recruiting staff to drink alcohol with prospects’ families, “well aware that staffers would leave the events after consuming alcohol.” It further alleges that coaches and staff regularly consumed alcohol at head coach Kirby Smart’s home during recruiting events before driving recruits’ families in university vehicles.
The complaint also includes a text message dated Dec. 14, 2019 from ex-UGA director of player personnel Marshall Malchow allegedly sent to 13 staff members. The message reads, “Hey guys... if you are driving you can have fun at Coach Smarts but if you are driving a recruit make sure you don't get drunk. It will be a bad look if we have people who are supposed to be driving recruits getting lit.”
Another text message from a separate Athletic Association employee told recruiting staff members on Feb. 22, 2022 that an associate athletics director said to turn an Athens restaurant “into a bar with [recruits'] families and don't leave.”
The University of Georgia responded to the amended complaint, which provides evidence contradicting the Athletic Association’s claims that UGA enforced policies preventing staffers from driving university vehicles while under the influence.
“We are reviewing the amended complaint, but we dispute its claims and will vigorously defend the Athletic Association's interest in court,” a university spokesperson said Thursday in a statement.
