Listening to a Carlin album for the first time was a rite of passage for my generation. I think I was about nine when we found an LP in my friends parent's collection. We always had to listen to them when no adults were around or on headphones. It wasn't strictly taboo, but kind of frowned upon. Of course, back then we would laugh at anything that had profanity, but as I got older I realized the genius of his work. He carried on the tradition of Lenny Bruce, yet managed to break in to the mainstream without compromizing himself. There are many comedians who are funny, but Carlin was one of the few who used the form to encourage people to think outside the box and question the status quo. I'll paraphrase a bit of his interview with Jesus.
Jesus: So then these three wise men came...I don't know how wise they were, following a star. Doesn't sound very wise to me. And they each brought gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh. I never did know exactly what myrrh was, though.
Interviewer: It's a type of gum resin.
Jesus: Gum resin? Yeah, that's what every newborn baby needs...gum resin!
