To a large degree, it really depends on what you already know. I think the free resources aren't as good as they used to be. Rootsweb used to be pretty good, but it was bought out by ancestry. If you don't mind giving them your credit card number, the free trials on ancestry can usually provide quite a bit of solid info.

I had a little bit of luck with familysearch.org which, I believe, is an LDS site. A lot of what you find through them, though, takes you off to paywalls somewhere else if I remember correctly.

There are other free resources that can be quite useful if you have specific things you are looking for (military service records, land titles, etc.)

For me, when I did the free month at Ancestry, and by the way I had no problem just getting my one free month and not paying, the best part was that most of my family history was already put together by people I don't know. You just use what they've already done, maybe starting at a generation or two back. So my entire history was filled out on both sides back in to Europe by and Grandmother's brother-in-law's niece or something and an Aunt on the other side.

The European records weren't on Ancestry, however, I think.

Also, for the record, I was expecting with an Irish girl and was checking for ginger history. Ancestry does not however have a function to identify gingers, FWIW.

European records require an international account, so it's significantly more expensive. So yea, can't get it for free.

My European ancestry has been collected through an Aunt I know who is really, really into it. I am not sure what her resources were. She did find stuff in Scotland for my family going many generations back though.

Is the Ancestry one useful like this or do you think she obtained these another way? It may be worth the pay if it can replicate searching in country.

Thanks for the info peeps.
My grandmother recently passed and I was looking thru a scrapbook her mother had put together. There are names going back to the early 1800's with obituaries and such. Apparently my great great grandfather was the mayor of New Lex. Not sure how I feel about that.

The international records have helped my family a good bit. We've gotten birth and death records, military records and some other more random records via international Ancestry, but then, I have no idea if we would have found better stuff had we looked in the country. Also, Ancestry.com does not do translations, so the international records can be somewhat inaccessible for mono linguistic people like myself.
