Gene Smith (Former AD, ‘10 AD of the Year, '13 NAAC Organizational Leadership Award)

No one should regard this as indicating my support of Gene Smith, or a suggestion that his job should be secure. But I'd caution everyone not to treat what ESPN says about Ohio State as an indictment of Smith. I'm not sure there is an AD alive who could have managed the spin applied by ESPN on what happened with Tressel and the Tat 5.

Smith says he wants Ohio State to play two home games a year after dark

By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Sunday October 30, 2011

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith believes the time has come for the Buckeyes to make home night games like last night?s against Wisconsin more than a once-a-year occurrence.

The Buckeyes have never played more than one night game a season in Ohio Stadium. Before last night, the last Big Ten night home game was in 2008 against Penn State.

Smith said he has suggested to school officials that OSU play host to two night games a year if circumstances permit.

?We play three night games a year,? Smith said. ?We always play two on the road. If our schedule works and it works for the rest of the institution ? we always have to be sensitive to the impact on the rest of the campus ? as opposed to having our team on the road for two nights, maybe it?s better to be at home for two nights and on the road for one.?

I believe today was the first time that President Gee publicly admonished Gene Smith with his reaction (regardless if it's window-dressing or otherwise):

Gee Quote:
?I am aware that you took certain actions and believed you had appropriately distanced him from the program,? Gee wrote in a letter dated today. ?However, the revelations about student employment and student involvement at the Cleveland-area charity gala, both involving Mr. DiGeronimo, indicate that those cautions were insufficient."

?The consequences were significant for student-athletes and this institution. I am disappointed that this is where we find ourselves. You know I find this unacceptable,? Gee wrote.
I would say the Gee comment is the "beginning of the end," but the inevitable was probably decided months ago.

Wonder how much the buyout will be, considering Smith's contract runs through June 2016. The university could always re-assign him, I suppose.

Please tell me what Les has done to our university and why you want him gone?

Stood 100% behind JT with Gee. Then when the kitchen got hot, dumped him. Doesn't sound like a leader or someone I'd like to be in a fox hole with. Also, runs tOSU with his check book. Kinda like Boone Pickens at the other OSU. I don't like to see Universities for sale.

Well, the AD hires the head coach. If "they" intend to fire him I wouldn't think that "they" would let him hire the new head coach (Fickell or someone else). You would want the new AD to be able to hire "his man". That would mean we wouldn't get a perminate head coach until after the new AD is in place.

:(
