I never understood it but Auburn had been trying to run Tubs out of town for years. They were going to can him the year that he went undefeated and then had to keep him...Its a strange situation and I have to agree with Rugby, the job is not worth the headache that it seemingly comes with
Auburn has always been and will always be 2nd fiddle.
Tubby got them past Bama which is what everyone thought they wanted.
But that wasn't good enough. He only won 1 SEC title in 10 years.
Nick Saban won 2 in 5 years.
Mark Richt won 3 in 7 years.
Urban Meyer has 2 in 4 years.
Dubose won 1 in 4 years.
Les Miles has 1 in 4 years.
Houston Nutt has just as many West titles as Tuberville.
I don't think Tubby should have been canned by any stretch of the imagination. But I can at least see why they did it. During the last 7 -8 years or so, there is no excuse for having only 1 conference championship.
LSU blows it in every even-numbered year, Arky is as inconsistent as they come, Bama, Kentucky, and Miss St. were on probation, Florida had Zook as coach for a while, Vandy ain't a football school, So Carolina is never a threat, Tennessee hasn't been Tenn since the late 90's. That leaves only UGA as a consistent threat on a year to year basis. Yet he still only managed 1 conference crown.
With Bama back on the upswing, Ole Miss back in the Mix, Arkansas has the coach AU wanted, and LSU ain't gonna be 7-5 forever, they don't know when (if ever) another SEC west title is going to come around, let alone winning the conference. He had (what was perceived to be) a chance to Auburn into a dynasty, and didn't even come close to doing so.
