What is this hock-ee of which you speak?

That's a sport which ought to really fit in with Southern culture:

[PistolPete]wait, there's basketball in this conference?[/PistolPete]
FIFY

oh, i'd put our all time top 5 players against any of the big schools that actually give a shit about the sport. but basketball will always be the 3rd sport at LSU.

which is why we usually ain't real good, and don't have great fan support.

The new sheriff in town is taking his show off the grid. In a move that new coach Will Muschamp said was done to minimize distractions, Florida announced on Wednesday that spring practices would be closed to the public for what is believed to be the first time in school history. The 15 practices also will be closed to the media, which means the first time anyone not affiliated with UF will get a look at the revamped Gators will be the spring game on April 9. "With a new coaching staff here teaching our system, we feel like minimizing our distractions is important," Muschamp said in a statement. "We realize that there is high interest from the fans, and we are extremely appreciative of the support that the Gator Nation gives us."

Fastest player in nation can help Gators

Speed is one of the great "wow" factors in sports. Many coaches, like former Florida coach Urban Meyer, aspire to have the country's fastest team. With that in mind, who will be the fastest players in college football this fall? ... 1. Jeff Demps, RB/WR, Florida Gators. The fastest man in college sports. Period. No football player has bigger sprint credentials than this Gator. Demps' home must be littered with NCAA hardware from all of his national titles in track. Earlier this month, he repeated as the 60-meter champ at the 2011 NCAA indoor track and field championships. Demps' documented track times are insane. He has had a productive football career as a home-run threat for Meyer. Even though he has spent most of the spring with the Gators track team, not with new football coach Will Muschamp, who is shifting to a pro-style attack, Demps still should have an important role in the team's offense this year.

Gators have big question marks heading into spring game

61126_0830sports200.jpg

GAINESVILLE - Florida mysteriously changed the name of what for decades was called the "Orange and Blue Game,'' substituting the word "Debut'' for "Game'' several years ago.
For once, the change in wording actually makes sense. There's a lot of debuting that will go on in Saturday's noon contest - theoretically, at least. Charlie Weis will serve as the offensive coordinator for the first time, Dan Quinn as the defensive coordinator and Will Muschamp is the new head coach.
With media and fans locked out of workouts, nobody really knows what - if anything - will be revealed today in how the Gators plan to attack the 2011 season. There may be a few hints here and there, but don't expect a whole lot.
Regardless, new is a good word for the Gators, considering last year's 8-5 finish. Ten things to ponder from Saturday's spring game:
1. Who will step forward on the offensive line?
With all the injuries this spring up front, that's an issue that will continue into August. But if it still exists in September, get ready for a long season.
"Jon Harrison, we've been very pleased with his move to center. We're really pleased with where he is right now, he's going against some good players inside. . . . John Halapio has done a really nice job at guard. Ian Silberman has moved to guard and done a nice job. Chaz Green has played both right and left tackle,'' Muschamp said. "Because of injury, now it's a little bit of a luxury to have him play both sides, so we're real pleased for him to be able to do that. Xavier Nixon has done some nice things at tackle, although he's been out with an ankle recently. So I think at times again we've done some really nice things. It's just consistency that we need, and there's been inconsistency because of the injuries.''
2. How will depth on the line impact the Orange and Blue?
"I may line up at left tackle,'' Muschamp joked of today's spring scrimmage. "I wouldn't want to be the blind side there. But we'll be fine. The kids will work through it and we'll manage it. That's what we've got and we're going to do the best we can with what we have.''
3. Will the spring game actually be very vanilla, since there's been so much secrecy about the new offense and defense?
.

Gators offer little to ease fan concerns about UF quarterback situation

John_Brantley_106811145a.jpg

Ready, set ... worry? One quarterback led the scrimmage in passing yards. Another one threw the winning touchdown. Neither is the Gators' starter. That redshirt senior John Brantley was outdone in the Orange & Blue Debut by back-up Tyler Murphy and walk-on Christian Provancha on Saturday was enough to raise questions if not concern about the position. Brantley's role as the starter is worrisome depending how much can be gauged by one half of one scrimmage. For Will Muschamp, Brantley's 4-for-14 passing game for 45 yards wasn't reason to worry. The new coach said his quarterback has earned the starting spot with his play this spring, adding that Brantley has close to a 70 percent completion percentage since the start of practice.
