Gary Williams (BTN analyst, fmr. Ohio State, Maryland HC)

After reading that article and some of the comments below it, I do not think that the Maryland faithful life their athletic director at all. Don't know if Gary would have stayed at Ohio State because there were some other things going on outside of basketball with him. I will say that he was one hell of a recruiter while he was at Ohio State and sweated just as much in Columbus as in College Park.

ebbie Yow accuses Gary Williams

The frosty relationship between North Carolina State athletic director Debbie Yow and Maryland's Gary Williams took a nasty turn during the introduction of the Wolfpack's new men's basketball coach.
Yow -- who spent 16 years as Maryland's athletic director -- called out the Terrapins coach, who won the 2002 NCAA championship working under her, of interfering with the search.
It happened during North Carolina State's news conference introducing Mark Gottfried, who replaced Sidney Lowe. Yow responded to a reporter's question to Gottfried about whether she had a reputation of being difficult to work with.
"I don't have a reputation across all men's basketball of being difficult to work with," she said Tuesday. "I have a reputation of not getting along with Gary Williams, who has tried to sabotage the search. Come on, we all know that. OK, so whatever.
"It's not a reputation. It's Gary Williams out there doing his thing. Whatever."
When asked if she had specific examples of anything Williams had said or done, Yow replied: "There'll be somebody else writing about that nationally. I don't need to be doing that. That's not my job."
Doug Dull, a team spokesman at Maryland, did not immediately return a call or email from The Associated Press for comment. But Williams did release a statement to the Baltimore Sun saying he hasn't talked to anyone, coach or athletic director, connected to the N.C. State search.
"I don't have any interest in the N.C. State search, since I'm coaching at Maryland and working hard to run our program," Williams said. "Anyone who says I've had contact with a prospective coach or athletic director regarding this search isn't being truthful."

Gary had the chance to go back to his alma mater which for some folks is the cats meow, along with coaching in the decidedly more basketball oriented ACC.

Whether Gary sticks around much longer based on his recent record is another story....can you say coasting....

Gary Williams to retire

Maryland coach Gary Williams is retiring, the school announced on Thursday. Williams will have a news conference on Friday.

Williams coached 22 season at Maryland, winning the national title in 2002.

"It's the right time," Williams said in a news release. "My entire career has been an unbelievable blessing. I am fiercely proud of the program we have built here. I couldn't have asked any more from my players, my assistant coaches, the great Maryland fans and this great university. Together, we did something very special here."

Williams' teams have reached 14 NCAA tournaments in the past 18 seasons and have advanced to the Sweet 16 seven times.

He has won 461 games at College Park. The Terps were 19-14 this past season.

Williams began his coaching career at American before spending four seasons at Boston College and three at Ohio State. His career coaching record is 668-380 in 33 seasons.
Knew something was up once Jordan Williams signed with an agent yesterday. Sucks to see the face of the Terps leave, but can't say I didn't see it coming within the next few years.

He had more or less passed his excellence window...still a great coach. Now who do we root for against Dook and UNC?

MD, you think Dickerson has a shot at an interview at least?

Honestly, have no idea. I can't think of anyone on the current staff that is ready to take over, so I'm guessing they'll be looking outside the program.

While he didn't do anything amazing at Tulane, he's so familar with those recruiting grounds, and was a big part of their winning years. Plus a year with Matta couldn't hurt. I would think they probably try and go after one of the "young" up incoming Coaches.

I hope so. Too many good prospects leaving the state to go elsewhere. Can't believe how recruiting fell off the map (with the exception of the last year or two) after winning a NC in 2002. We shall see.

With all due respect to Coach Dickerson, I think thought Maryland job is really a plum and they will go after someone with big-time experience. As the commish mentions below, that area is a very fertile recruiting ground and they have lost some prime recruits in the past couple years.

With that, Gary can at least take a shower:)

There's some connection to them losing recruits the past few years, and Dickerson being gone the past few years. Personally I think that is the only reason why he would be considered, certainly not for his Head Coaching history.

Sean Miller in Maryland mix, sources say

Arizona Wildcats coach Sean Miller's decision as to whether he embraces a potential offer from Maryland will likely come down to if he wants to move his family East just two years after he moved to the Southwest, according to a source with direct knowledge of Miller's decision-making process.

"He's looking at Maryland from a recruiting standpoint of how you can get the flood gates to open up there if you did it the right way and then compete for Final Fours yearly,'' said the source with direct knowledge. "But he also has Arizona at a level now where there isn't as much competition for players [out West], where the Pac-12 now has a major television commitment, where he could stay there for 20 years. So it comes down to what his family wants to do. That's why he could talk to Maryland and not go.''

Multiple sources said Miller had become the primary target of Maryland and athletic director Kevin Anderson after the sudden retirement of 66-year old Gary Williams on Thursday.

Contd....

I'd be a fan of the hire.
