I'm reading that differently Mili....I'm reading that as UT is an upgrade from Auburn
I think that you are reading it correctly. Here are a few reasons as to why some would consider UT an upgrade over Auburn.

1) you are in austin. Auburn is a small cowtown in alabama, Austin is large enough to be a city and small enough to feel safe. I have never been to auburn but can tell you that there are few places in america with a better climate and location than austin and i would be willing to bet dimes to dollars that Auburn is not one of them. Unless you don't like rolling hills, lakes, rivers, Live music, great bbq, and mexican food, and pretty women, Austin wins.

2.) He is from Texas and began his career at SFA as a lumberjack. Most coaches from texas want to get back there in some form. See coach Fran at atm

3) If i am not mistaken we will pay him more. Even if we are not it is dang close and he will be among the highest paid DC's in the nation.

4) More national recognition, Robinson got a hc job after one year at texas( i know that he also had nfl experience) Chizic did as good or better of a job at auburn for the past 3 years and hasn't had that opportunity. He has stated in the past that his goal is to be a head coach.

im sure there are more but that is the way that I see it.

I think it's an upgrade for both. Greg Robinson did a great job here but I expect more from Chizik. I'd also say that UT is an upgrade from Auburn if it were only for facilities and recruiting. I doubt many people would argue with the fact that Texas has a more storied history than Auburn. I'm open to being wrong about this but I don't see any way that being the DC at Auburn is better than being the DC at Texas. Moving from Ohio State to Texas or Texas to Ohio State is a lateral move. As far as cash is concerned, I'm fairly certain the raise he got by moving to UT pretty much equates to a cost of living increase that comes with living in Austin (at least that what I've read on the UT message board.)

Perhaps he means that inspite of our success with our D cordinator last year, this may be an upgrade for us regarding that, and that AS a cordinator, UT is an upgrade for himself coming from Auburn. I realize Auburn has some history and plays in the SEC, but so does Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Miss St., Arky, Kentucky, etc. Are you prepared to say jumps from those schools would be a lateral move to UT?

"Everywhere else" isn't Columbus, Ohio on a Saturday night
You're correct. "Everywhere else" in this sense would refer to Lincoln, Nebraska @ night, Manhattan, Kansas @ night, Stillwater, OK @ night, Lubbock, TX @ night, Fayettenam, AR @ night, College Station, TX @ night, etc.

Oh, and a few others during the day. :)

I agree that Texas is an upgrade from Auburn. Auburn does play in the SEC, but historically they're the number 2 team in the state. Texas has a huge fan base and is one of the top 10 all-time programs.

High Lonesome, I don't agree fully with several of your points:

1) Town size doesn't always mean better. Plus you admit "I have never been to auburn". Hard to make a real comparative argument with that.

4) I don't see how Texas brings more "nationally recognition" than Auburn. Once you get into the top echelons of the power conferences (SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, etc.), the level of national recognition is the same.

HL, I will give you #2...I have read the stories of the Texas loyalties and always wanting to come home.

As far as a storied program, IMO they about even on that front.

Thank you for your opinion. I can always respect a well thought out post...even if I dont agree with it

I agree with you that town size doesnt always matter, but what i was trying to say was that austin is the best of both worlds, big city and small town. Auburn, from what my sec buddies tell me, is the equivelent of college station. Nothing more than a tiny cowtown. I love the country so that is not a knock, but austin has country as well as city. This is clearly an oppinion but i dont think that it is too far off since austin has been rated as one of the top ten cities in the nation for some time now. I doubt that Auburn has cracked the top 100

Some teams just get more recognition than others regardless of how well they do. In any given year Texas, Oklahoma, Mich., tOSU, USC, Florida State, Miami, and Notre Dame will all get more recognition than the other schools in their confrence regardless of whether or not they diserve it. It may be hard to notice in your own back yard but I can tell you for sure that no matter the records tOSU will always get more national pub than Iowa. Once again Auburn is much like atm here. Alabama is the flagship program in that state. If an Auburn coach and a Tide coach both had outstanding years you could be almost certain that the Tide coach would get more recognition. Honestly I wouldnt think that this is a concept that you would question since tOSU is obviously a program on short list of top coaching destinations.

The key is "any given year". Texas wasn't thought of as a top nationally recognized program from 1992 through 1999, when they went 5-6, 6-5, 5-5-1, 8-4, 8-5, 4-7, 9-3, and 9-5. Nor was Oklahoma, when they went 5-4-2, 9-3, 6-6, 5-5-1, 3-8, 4-8, 5-6, and 7-5 during the same time frame. Notre Dame also gets squat for national recognition nowadays, despite there NBC TV contract. By the way, in 1993 and 1994 when Auburn was going 11-0 and 9-1-1 respectively, a move from Auburn to Texas definitely would not have been perceived as an upgrade.

If you were to ask the average Joe Fan to name the 10 top all-time college programs off the top of his head, Auburn would get mentioned quite often. Texas would get mentioned in more responses probably, but not by much. My top 10, off the top of my head, in no particular order:

Alabama
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Ohio State
Michigan
Notre Dame
Southern California
Texas
Auburn
Penn State

I guess what you don't understand is that there have been somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 or 6 night games ever at the shoe. There is a difference, the crowd will be jacked up. If you make the trip, you will understand. Stillwater, Lubbock, Fayetteville, and College Station don't hold 104k, I don't think Lincoln does either but it is probably the closest of the bunch, and I don't remember any of those stadiums being tiered (stacked) so that everyone is right on top of the field. I guess what I am getting at is that because of the fact that it is rarely done (night games) everyone has a really special sense about the game, and will probably party accordingly. The atmosphere is unrivalled. Hope you can make it to the game, it will be a great time. I will also appologize now for the asshole fans who will act like jerks, there is always someone in a crowd of 100k+ that don't know how to act when alcohol is involved.

wow. you guys think the rose bowl win was that good?
has nothing to do with what we think and everything to do with numbers

before the rosebowl texas was tied with nebraska in all time wins, since they didnt win a bowl game texas is now one all time victory ahead of nebraska into the # 3 spot behind Mich. and ND

Do y'all have to bring in lights for night games? I heard that you did, but wasn't sure if that was true or not. I know Ohio State is legendary as a big party school, so I can see what you're talking about with a crazy crowd. Texas Tech is probably the best comparison for a crazy crowd Texas is used to but they can't compare in any way to the sheer number of people in the crowd.
