I don't think we need to worry about VY as much as people think...the only time last year I saw anything impressive out of him was the Michigan game (granted, I don't exactly follow Texas)...the boy can't throw the ball, and he won't be able to get outside consistently on our LBs

Look at VY's performance as a PASSER against GOOD defenses. He was 8-23 for 86 yards against Oklahoma and 3-9 for 19 yards against Missouri... I truly believe that the best way to handle him is for the DLINE to not be worried about trying to get tons of aggressive pressure but use a containment rush on young. IMO we WANT him to have to try and beat the OSU defense with his arm.

Young is going to get some production running the ball since they feature that as a part of there running game. All the OSU defense needs to focus on is getting a stalemate at the LOS....

It didn't take long for Jamaal Charles to impress at UT

Little Joe Washington comparisons have followed Jamaal Charles to Austin, where the former Memorial High School All-America has quickly created the same kind of buzz in early Longhorn practices that the Lincoln ex generated from his first day at Oklahoma some 33 years ago.

During the Longhorns second scrimmage, for instance, Charles was surrounded with seemingly no place to go but down. An instant later, according to offensive coordinator Greg Davis, Jamaal jumped laterally back to the inside, hit another gear and turned a two-yard gain into 10.

"After our offensive staff watched the play on tape, I told them the last guy I saw make that move also came from Port Arthur," said Davis, a former quarterback at PN-G. "I had never seen anybody do that until Little Joe came along and I haven't seen anybody do it since.

"Jamaal, I believe, is bigger than Little Joe and probably out and out faster," Davis continued. "But in terms of being able to jump sideways and not lose speed they are a lot alike. Like Joe, he's got a chance to be a really special player. He's made a great early impression."

Charles' showing in Texas' first scrimmage drew praise from UT head coach Mack Brown and Davis says he will definitely see action as a true freshman when the Longhorns open Sept. 3 against Louisiana-Lafayette.

"It's a little soon to say where he's going to be in the rotation, or whether we are going to pick our spots for him, but he's definitely going to be involved," Davis said. "It seems like he does something in every practice that just leaves you shaking your head.

"Today, we had him lined up in the I and we ran a lag draw to the tight end side. The defense brought a free safety blitz late and had a clear shot at him. The safety was in perfect position to make the play and didn't even get a hand on him. Jamaal left him spinning. And I'm talking about a pretty decent safety."

Texas' pre-camp depth chart showed junior Selvin Young as the No. 1 tailback, with sophomore Ramonce Taylor No. 2. It now appears Taylor is going to be moved around to take advantage of his big play ability and that Charles and 6-5, 275 pound freshman Henry Melton will line up behind Young.

Charles was the leading rusher in Texas first scrimmage, with eight carries for 40 yards and a touchdown. Melton also made his presence felt, bulling his way for 29 yards on only three carries, and is likely to been used in short yardage and goal-line situations.

The Longhorns' main man, of course, is QB Vince Young, whose escapability is going to make him the target of every defensive coordinator. In theory, all the attention Young commands should create some opportunities for the Texas tailbacks.

Charles, meanwhile, is steadily proving himself in areas that the average fan might not notice.

"It was obvious from seeing him on tape that Jamaal had all kinds of skills," Davis said. "But what you can't tell from tape is how a kid is going to adjust, how well he's going to pick up things and what kind of a job he'll do picking up blitzes. Thus far it's all been positive.

"Especially in blitz pickup, you don't know what a young guy like that will do. So often the blue chip- caliber running back has never been asked to do that. The first time we were in a blitz drill, Jamaal stepped right up with good balance and made the block. It was encouraging to see."

Davis said he first became familiar with Charles when Michael Haywood, the Longhorn assistant recruiting Southeast Texas, said he wanted him to take a look at a guy from his neck of the woods.

"I said what I always say when we're recruiting a guy from down there - 'he must be tough,' "Davis said with a chuckle. "Then my eyes got pretty big when I looked at the tape. He was what we call a 3-play recruit. I saw him three plays and said tell Mack we need to sign him."

Davis said Charles, a national champion hurdler, has dispelled two concerns about players who excel in track.

"You worry that track guys are fast but can't move laterally. We could see from the tape that Jamaal could move laterally. The other thing is you worry that because of their speed they will try to take everything to the sideline and outrun everybody. That's not the case with Jamaal. He hits the hole where the play is designed."

Another area in which Charles has made an impression is his penchant for allowing blockers to do what they are supposed to do.

"One of the key things I have seen out of really good backs all the way through my coaching career is a certain patience they have," Davis noted. "They are going fast and have great body control but they let things develop. Other guys are just a little out of control and seem to just miss making the right cut.

"Jamaal has shown that patience you see in great backs. Of course, we're talking about doing it in practice. But you could see that trait on his high school tapes."

Coming across loud and clear in Davis' comments is a clear affection for Charles' character.

"He's really a neat kid," Davis confirms. He's got a great personality. He studies the game. Vince says he's calm in the huddle. When he comes off he always wants to know how he did. Kids like that are so much fun to be around and to coach."

That's pretty much what the coaches at Oklahoma said about Little Joe.

Northwestern was 3-0 and ranked #14, and Washington (season opener) was ranked #17, coming into the games. We blasted both teams and both their seasons went to shit after that...
I stand corrected on Northwestern.

Lace up or slip one? I had a friend from Texas that would only wear burnt orange-y lace up cowboy boots from a certain brand (Justin's or something like that, he used to talk about it way too much)...it was the first time I ever saw lace up cowboy boots probably, though he was a city kid (and an Oklahoma fan), so probably different than you folks :)

Don't feel bad about the belt buckles, I know a lot of Ohioans that have gigantic belt buckles that they won as trophies at rodeos or livestock shows when they were younger
Obviously real boots. Lace up??

Even though he played for the Sooners, Joe Washington was one of most entertaining players to ever play college football.

Time will tell whether JC is the second coming. :wink2:

Since someone brought up our runningbacks I thought I would update you some.

Mack's comment about Selvin from yesterdays scrimmage was not what I would call a glowing report. In the practices I saw he did not look that impressive, and appears to have lost a step. He ran a 4.36 at a camp as a HS senior, but I have no idea how fast he really is now, probably still quicker than Benson. While I hope he does well, I am begining to suspect that he will not be our starter by mid season. I am also not one who ever thought he pushed Benson. Benson was injured at the time, and it still wasn't that close.

The coaches are insisting on using Ramonce as a general purpose back and have been using him more at WR lately. I do think he would be our best RB, but I don't expect Davis and Brown will use him that way. They want to save him for 10 or 15 special plays a game.

Charles is starting to come on and could be the guy by mid-season. As a true freshman I don't expect that he will have more than a couple carries against you this year. He is pretty fast, but not as fast as Ramonce.

Melton is our new 6-3 270 pound RB. There is no fat involved with that 270. He is reported to have run a 4.56 40 in camp and I believe it from watching him. He has a good burst through the hole and can mash people. He may get the call in some short yardage situations.
Selvin is going to get alot of work in the first game.

Ramonce may be speedy, but he is a little guy. You guys might be hurting if Selvin is indeed a step slow (there was a similar report earlier this fall IIRC).

VY without Selvin may force him to resort to mostly QB runs and passing. From the sounds of it, your best wr is Ramonce, since no one else seems to be stepping up. It's not a good thing when Mack's praise for some of your better WRs is that the player caught everything thrown at him. That is something that should happen anyway.

I like our chances more if Selvin isn't his old self.
You're mistaken if you think we will abandon the running game if something happens to Selvin. The running game has been our bread and butter for years. And we have the line to make it happen. They'll open holes for whoever is running the ball. We are ridiculously deep at the RB position anyway. But of course you guys know that, b/c we talk about it all the time.

But even if Freshman start, we will have a running game.

Selvin Young(who was taking snaps away from Cedric two years ago), one of the best receiving tight end's in the country, one of the best, and deepest D-line's in the country and one of the best secondary's in the country. Oh, and Aaron Harris, who should make about 15 tackles in this game. I'll give you the young, unproven wide receivers.
If we don't let Ginn hurt us in the return game, I say the final is Texas 20 Ohio St 16.

See you at the Tailgate
I hope Horns Fans are welcome

I hope he reads the whole thread. I only got to page 27 before I jumped in at the end. I think it was around 100 pages back then.

You're not any deeper than us if Selvin is a step slow. I don't expect you to abandon the run, but that's gonna leave you with exactly one proven commodity, VY (not counting your TE)... and a host of talent. Ramonce will probably be good, the rest I'll wait and see. I expected Shipley to be your best WR in our game, if he is still gimpy you guys are very thin at wideout. You can have all the potential in the world, but if that potential is filled with drop-happy guys, then I'd be a worried longhorn on the 10th.

I can't wait to see Ramonce and/or Charles (as a frosh) try and pick up all of our different blitzes. Good luck blocking Bobby Carpenter coming off of the edge, or Mike Kudla for that matter.

On a more gay note (yes the right side was farked at soonerfans):

David Thomas, best receiver, but he's a Tight End. I agree with Shipley though. Looks more and more as Taylor will be used in slot, etc. Means fresh back up Selvin. Experince is important though, I do see your point.

It'd be fun to fark what Mack is thinking in that picture on the left. Here's mine:

"Oh God I hope he can overcome my shortcomings as a coach."
:(

Actually, that was kind of funny.
