Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

the jay Richardson hit that got the roughing the passer call that lead to Texas' TD was a freaking AWESOME hit... take a look at the replay and you can see how wide McCoy's eyes were... welcome to the Big Time, kid... i have to say that overall i really was impressed with him... he just pulled down his helmet and went and threw a TD on his next attempt... he's gonna be a good one...

A Class Act

The Ohio State University has a lot to be proud of with Quarterback Troy Smith. Not only is he a solid QB, more importantly he is a great ambassador for the university and for college football. His quote at the end of the today's game was very classy and gave respect to a good (but not great) Texas team -- "It's not a revenge thing, any and every win we get during the course of the season is a good win." -- I hope you win out the rest of the season. With luck the Irish can do the same and we can meet again (and for me I would wish for a slightly different outcome than from last year). Today, Troy Smith made OSU my second favorite team. Go BUCKS!

A couple thoughts. None of which will be original, I'm sure, but I'm too tired (read: drunk) to read the 40 pages I've missed since Wednesday.

-Roughing to passer = WTF?!?!?!?!?! Horseshit.
-Texas OC ought to be fired. The run was working bigtime and he abandoned it. Get the F outta here. If I'm a UT fan, I'm forming the lynch mob.
-The hurry-up O at the end of the first-half = the offense we could run every possession (if Coach T. ever felt so inclined). Freaking scary.
-Lil' Animal is a monster.

Ummm....I could continue to ramble somewhat coherently....but I won't.

I thought it was important how TS addressed those questions about the suspension...He said all the right things IMO...He didn't avoid the questions, he answered in a way that shows his maturity...Good job TS!!!

Guaranteed: Another N.C.

I didn't call the score but I did call the tone of the game. As I was trying to point out in my post "When Was The Last Time..." there was no way a freshman quarterback was going to beat this Ohio State football team. I predicted 31-20 even as I was thinking it would be much worse as it really should have been last night. This is the same dynamic you could apply to the Notre Dame game yesterday as in my mind this year Texas and Penn State are eerily similar from a football psychology standpoint. When you have a new quarterback replacing a dynamic do-all quarterback, he has to prove to his teammates that he can make the plays when the opportunity comes up... and when you have an early big match-up that anxiety is punctuated. Did anybody else notice the number of dropped balls and frustration by the normally reliable PSU and Texas receiving corps? Did anybody else see how long it took for the USC receving corps to respond to Booty in the Arkansas game?

In my mind our real challenges are Iowa, Michigan State and Michigan because their leaders are proven. When Drew Tate slammed the ball to the turf in frustration with his line last year in Ohio Stadium I was both amused for that game and concerned for the one we have coming up. He has experience, talent and a bonified rallying cry against us. The same goes for Michigan State who was essentially defanged by coaching mistakes. Michigan, as we all know has made a living in the past by somehow beating "unbeatable" Ohio State teams. Still I feel a loss to them is less likely because Chad Henne is pulling the trigger and I can't imagine how Iowa and MSU are going to stop us while not making critical mistakes.

Troy Smith is great.. perhaps we'lll look back on him as OSU's greatest quarterback and he is indeed one of the big reasons we sit where we are today. But another big reason is our defense. There is a huge difference between what fans and the media have slipped into calling a "young" defense when it is more accurately a "new" defense that seems to shaping into the consumate bend but don't break unit. Was it just me or did you not think the closer Northern Illinois and Texas got to the endzone, the less likely it was for them to score.

In my opinion the biggest opponent we beat last night were the naysayers... and the biggest thing we accomplished was to send a clear impression throughout the Big Ten that our "new" defense can hang with anybody.

I hope I'm not jinxing it... but I think we're unstoppable.

We'll know who's the idiot in just over 6 days.

I disagree that the Texas offense and tOSU defense are unknowns. If N. Ill can run up 350 yards on tOSU, Texas will have 400+.

As far as the other matchup goes, both teams bring back a similar amount of talanet and have improved to a similar degree, so I think it's a push. In other words I expect tOSU to get about the same amount of yards as last year (255).

If those numbers are true then tOSU needs turnovers and big special teams plays to win. During the Off season I said that Texas should be a 14-17 point favorite. Well tOSUs defense is worse than I thought, and Colt is better than I thought he would be so I'm revising it up a TD to 21-24 (given 0 net turnovers and similar field position).
:slappy:Thanks for all the gems like this one xray. Guess there's a reason to actually play the games afterall. I'll spare you the time...It's Greg Davis' fault.

Great post. As for your predictions--one game at a time, my friend.

Interesting thoughts on the defense. I've thought the same thing recently, except that I've said that the "naysayers", as you call them (and rightly so) were confusing the adjective "unknown" with "inept". Hardly!!:tongue2:

Hope we run the table.

Impressed

We won against a great team tonight. For some reason, before last year I always thought Mack Brown was kind of spineless. I guess because he couldn't win big games. That went out the window after last year's win against us, and especially after UT's win over USC. It wasn't all Vince Young; MB gets his players to work hard. Not to mention he is a genuine class act. Did you see his greeting of that kid immediately before kickoff (I don't know who it was, but it doesn't matter)? Overall, great effort tonight by both teams. Texas, for the most part, conducted themselves like guys that just want to play.

Take notice some of you players for other schools (e.g. Miami (FL)) and Charlie Weis. The best teams of this generation play to win, not for their own personal glory.

Thank you for that. We hope to see Notre Dame again too.
