Ha, it didn't take long for ya'll to come out with someone you think can replace Ramonce. While Sergio's numbers seem to be very impressive, he hasn't even played at the college level, yet. I'm not saying he won't be a good player, and I understand your excitement and the hopes you have over Sir Sergio, but it just proves my theory correct that it wouldn't be long before Longhorn Nation thought they'd have someone to replace Ramonce, and be just as good.

What I can't understand is how Tressel hasn't hired anyone off of Texas' staff like he did when he found out OSU was playing Northern Illinois.

:nerd:

I've heard if Colt McCoy wasn't a QB, he'd be the top rated Safety in the nation. Jevan Snead, had he elected to focus on catching, instead of passing would have been a 5 Star WR recruit. There is only one position that Jamaal Charles wouldn't have been rated #1 at, and that's Center.

Ohio State can't compete.

The situation with Ramonce does make things interesting for UT at tailback though. Texas has now lost their two leading rushers (VY and Ramonce), and was presumably converting Melton to DE(?)

Selvin Young has had some injury problems in the past, and I believe it was mentioned he might have had some weight/conditioning issues too. I'm looking at last years game-by-game log and Selvin averaged 7.3 carries per game. He was DNP for two, with his heaviest workload coming on 19 attempts for 43 yards in the first game against Colorado. Jamaal Charles also had a comparitively light workload, only 9.2 carries per game average, with his busiest day being 16 carries against Rice.

With Taylor gone, does Melton's position go back to RB out of priority, or would Kindle be pressed into service? I know Charles brings the wheels in the group, but given he's built for track (6'1", 190) is there any concern that he can carry 15-20 times a game or more?

It seems as though what was once a strength could quickly become a weakness if either Charles or Young were injured, and a lack of depth at RB could be a serious problem with a rookie at QB.

do you have concerns about pittman due to his listed size? I think charles proved last year that he is extremely strong for his size, bouncing off of a lot of solid tacklers from osu.

Melton was never moved to DE...he has always been at RB. I would still call running back a strength on this team though clearly the loss of ramonce hurts. We also have Vondrell Magee who will be a true freshman. Obviously this would be last resort but he is talented and running back is a spot that younger kids can step in and do well. So i guess to answer your question, Yes there is some concern but not enough to make us forget about the qb situation

No. Pittman was listed at 5-11", 195 last year, so that's apples & oranges.

I don't doubt Jamaal's ability or strength, I'm just asking whether or not anyone thinks he has the mental and physical makeup to be an everydown back. E.g., since he rarely carried the ball 10 times in consecutive weeks, what would lead fans to think he can carry 20 times a game over a whole season. Would it even be necessary?

HL answered the question though. I was unsure what Melton's status was, as there was a lot of chatter in the spring about moving him.

Reportedly, Selvin Young is down to around 209- 207, and has regained the quickness he showed as a frosh. Also, Melton is said to be down to around 255-250.

is it really that big of a difference. Charles is listed at 6'1" 190lbs and thats on the spring roster...wouldn't be all that big of a deal to gain 5 lbs or so....anyway, i guess i am trying to say that his size isn't a concern to me but the fact that he did get injured last year is at least a red flag. Also, looking at cpg last year is a bit misleading as we had a true rotation between 3 running backs. thats not to say that one couldn't have taken the lead and been a 20+ carry back, just that it worked better for us as a stable

There was a game in high school where Jamaal Charles carried the ball 50 times. I think he had about 380 yards in that game. The Port Arthur offense was pretty plain vanilla to say the least.

I'm certainly not comparing carries in high school (although it was a pretty good district) to carries at the college level, especially against tOSU, but I don't think his durability is an issue.

Vondrell McGee was a National top 100 player, so at the very least he adds some depth.

And as for the extent that losing Ramonce Taylor hurts the 2006 Longhorns, I'll put it this way:
RT was an all-purpose back, not quite a RB and not quite a WR. He has great talent and playmaking ability which will be missed. But if someone gave me a choice to pick one of the following players to kick off the team:
Jamaal Charles
Ramonce Taylor
Limas Sweed
Billy Pittman
I would pick Ramonce every time. The other three would get the vast majority of the carries and receptions even if Ramonce was still on the team.

As far as importance to the team, I would put RT in a group of Quan Cosby (was the 3rd WR for the later part of last year) and Selvin Young. In other words, they're certainly valuable, but not the go-to guys at their respective positions. Although I reserve the right to add Jordan Shipley and Jermichael Finley to that list if and when they perform as expected.

I hope y'all can understand that reasoning. As I recall, some UT fan earlier in this thread got called out for saying something along the lines of "Ramonce is expendable." He most certainly is not, but I think his relative importance to this year's team has been overstated.
