Game Thread Game Three: #1 Ohio State 37, Cincinnati 7 (9/16/06)

I hate to say it but I am very uninterested in this game. I will be watching it on TV and everything but I hope the Bucks aren't mailing it in like me. We are obviously going to dominate this game, I just hope we don't see them looking past UC or thinking its going to be a walk over game. I don't think JT or Smith will allow that to happen. Its just hard to get up for UC when ya just smacked Texas in the mouth.

Go Bucks!!

That's one of the great things about having so many young players vying for PT - especially on defense. They will go full-out to make plays and make their mark. Look how D Washington has stepped up in the first two games, for instance. Homan and Russell are not so much of a surprise.
Look for Barrow, Wilson, and Rose to make plays this week, as well as maybe guys like Terry, Coleman and Amos.
Also, Hartline, Robo, and maybe Dukes and Small know they will be getting chances to make some plays this week. Not to mention that Beanie character.

With very few exceptions, the starters cannot afford to "mail it in" due to the competition and depth on the team. Plus, the Seniors won't let that happen, anyway.

Buckeyes ?not satisfied yet?
By Tim May

While Ohio State was a clear winner in the showdown for No. 1 in Austin, Texas, soundly beating defending national champion Texas, what did such a win really prove on the second Saturday in September?
?We didn't get that much out of it other than a win in Game 2,? receiver Anthony Gonzalez said today as the Buckeyes started preparing for a game against Cincinnati at noon Saturday in Ohio Stadium. ?There's still lots of football to be played.
?We certainly didn't win a championship, we didn't win a ring, nothing concrete we can kind of hang our hats on. The only thing we did do was we were fortunate to win a difficult road game and hopefully learn a lot from it.?
OSU could claim bragging rights from a 24-7 win over the Longhorns, but that's about it, linebacker James Laurinaitis said.
?I think this game was kind of set as the national title of September, but basically we know we've got 10 more weeks left to play,? said Laurinaitis, who was named the Big Ten defensive player of the week after his interception and two forced fumbles played key roles in the win. ?We have a lot of games we need to focus on, and one mental lapse can cause an upset.
?We know we're not satisfied yet, that we haven't played our best game, and we just need to keep improving.?
They did learn a couple of things about their team, though.
?That we obviously have some talent, and that we have the ability to win the big games and what not ? (and) we found out with our young defense, we stepped up when we needed to,? Laurinaitis said. ?But like the coaches said, we haven't arrived yet, we're not nearly at the level we were last year, and we need to keep working toward that goal.?
There were no major injuries reported from the Texas game. The most notable lineup change going into that game was Anderson Russell's move to starter at free safety ahead of Nick Patterson. Russell remained No. 1 on the depth chart released this week.

Well i think this win proved a couple of things. One is that this defense is really talented and is own the right track game experience will make this defense very, very good by the time the Michigan game rolls around. Number 2 Ohio state is a premier program you just dont win these type of games if you were a questionable program there is talent, a excellent coaching staff, good administration, great fanfare, great alumni and good history. The John Cooper era help get us back in the limelight and Tressel has done nothing but elevate this program now we must sustain it. We all knew what the offense could do comin into the season and they will be much more potent by the end of the year. Sep 12, 2006 04:22 pm
Each game is a season unto itself. JoePa's boys are always a tough out. Drew Tate will be back in form, in Iowa City. We frequently struggle in one or two games between early October and mid-November. And the Team Up North swears it has more talent this year and that Lloyd is willing to open up the playbook a bit more. Sorry to sound trite, but let's take 'em one game at a time, fellow Bucks fans. Let's think about Glendale when the BCS boys hand us our ticket.

what channel.

The East Coast Direct TV Feed are the major New York stations. They are not listed on TitanTV as carrying the game. If Taos is in NM and receives CSNET then he certainly can see the game (channel 656) or MSG (621)

Anyway, I am interested in the game for several reasons.

First it is an excellent chance for the running game and blocking to get fully on track, second it is a chance to once again see the WR Crops strut their stuff, and third we get to see which young defenders are going to maintain their intensity following the Texas game. This is in effect our second tune-up, the one that leads into the Big Ten season. I want to see them running on all cylinders.

I noticed in the preview that Cincy's DTs are 285 and 235 pounds, respectively. I'm expecting the running game to really get on track this week. Our big (and deep) line ought to wear those guys down pretty quickly. If we spend the whole second half running the ball because of a big lead, it could still get ugly...

Tressel, OSU players keeping win over Texas in perspective

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Wednesday, September 13, 2006
COLUMBUS ? Ohio State erased any suspicions about their No. 1 rating on one glorious night in Texas, but coach Jim Tressel has warned his players to treat all the praise coming their way as if it's labeled with a skull and crossbones.
"We don't tell them what to listen to or not listen to," he said. "We do tell them that publicity is like poison; it only kills you if you swallow it."
The Buckeyes (2-0) host lightly regarded Cincinnati (1-1) at noon Saturday. And while they haven't lost to an in-state foe since 1921, the elements may be in place for an upset.
There's the potential for an emotional hangover from the Texas win, of course, and Big Ten play starts next week with a visit from Penn State.
But receiver Anthony Gonzalez doesn't believe the Buckeyes are poised for a letdown.
"The key to getting over the Texas game is to really understand in the big picture what it meant. ... We're not getting a ring for it. We didn't win a championship as a result of it. There's really no reason for us to sit there and think about that game ? as great as it was," he said.
Gonzalez pointed to one result from last weekend that should keep the Buckeyes from becoming puffed up: Division I-AA New Hampshire's upset at Northwestern.
"The reality is with scholarship limitations ... there's a lot of talent (scattered around) this country and a lot of smart people running that talent," Gonzalez said.

[FONT=arial,sans-serif]Pettrey settling in as OSU kicker

3:06 p.m.

COLUMBUS - Ohio State will play Cincinnati on Saturday with a more confident kicker than the Buckeyes brought to Texas.

Coach Jim Tressel said he could see freshman Aaron Pettrey?s confidence grow after he missed a 28-yarder in the first quarter then made a 31-yarder in the third quarter.

?I saw his place-kicking confidence grow a little. The first one, he hesitated a little bit, then rushed it, and didn?t hit it well,? Tressel said today at his weekly luncheon. ?The one that he did make was OK. It went through the goal post, but it wasn?t wonderful. But then his next couple extra points, you could see him get a little stroke.

?If you saw the ball on the extra points, they were dead center. Not that it?s worth any more points if it?s dead center, but I think that tells you something. That?s hopefully now seven or eight place kicks he?s had in his career, and I?d like to think he?ll just keep getting better.?

RUSSELL IN, PATTERSON OUT: Ohio State?s depth chart this week finally reflects what was obvious Saturday night: Freshman Anderson Russell is the starting free safety and sophomore Nick Patterson is not.

Patterson had started the opener, with Russell as the fifth defensive back on passing downs, but Patterson couldn?t get on the field against Texas as Russell continued to make plays.

?Anderson has been playing well and demonstrating that he deserved that,? Tressel said. ?So Nick, in essence, at that position was replaced by Anderson.?
