Game Thread: Louisiana Tech 40, Fresno State 28 (final)

Damn, is Bradshaw palying QB for them again?

So much for Oregon's "quality win". Wonder what their SOS ranking will be now. This will hurt them even more with the computers.

Good point. I guess they go from the #1 SOS in the nation to about the 80th? Just grabbing at straws. Funny thing is, my gut tells me Mallard nation has no idea that this game might mean something to them.

methomps is right, it won't hurt enough to matter. Their at-large bid will not be affected by this in my opinion. At worst, they would slip below ND, which I find unlikely (would a fresno loss hurt that much?). Even if that happens, they will still be the lesser team vs. OSU (since ND is a biased lock), and will need lobbying to get in.

However, I really wish there were no polls until much later in the year. ND got tons of respect for beating Pitt, UM and was not damaged for losing to an upstart MSU squad, which now has failed to make a bowl game. All three opponents had disappointing years.

that's why the computer polls this year (and using SOS in previous years for the BCE poll) have shown to be a more accurate ranking of a team than the "human" (i.e. man with an agenda) polls.

IIRC they are already behind ND. It looks better to say "We beat the WAC champion" than it does to say "Well we beat a team that almost beat USC" is all. It wont hurt Oregon's eligibility, and that's not what I meant in the first instance.. it only hurts their arguement as to why they might be deserving.

define: accurate ranking

SOS - Computer polls.

If fresno wins the whining commitee can bolster the win v. Fresno.

Do you really think the Fiesta committee is hanging a multi-million dollar decision on how some team Oregon played over 2 months ago is doing tonight?

Looking forward to that PAC-10/WAC challenge (The PAC/WAC sponsored by Cracker Jack?) I'm sure we'll be seeing in the future, since Fresno hangs with the best of 'em and can't even win the WAC :tongue2:

I agree it's better for oregon to have fresno win, I just don't think it's gonna tilt the scales that much. Oregon will get in b/c they have 1 loss and have incredibly strong lobbying.

Maybe the boll committee is more fair than the pollsters. I still think most of the nation looks at Fresno as the team that can nearly beat USC despite 5 turnovers... long before they care whether or not they won their conference.

I agree that "well we beat a team that almost beat USC" is not a strong argument, b/c its daisy chaining. However, I think Fresno earned major respect from that game, which carries over to the Oregon win.

No, and I don't think I indicated that I did. I indicated that the best result for Mallard fans is a Fresno win, that's all. Their position is stronger the better their opponants do. It's really just that simple. Was "means something" too strong? Fine. I can live with that. No, it wont make a difference, least I don't think so. But it doesn't help the whine wagon's cause.. which was my point.

Edit - thanks for the standing Josh, I had ND and Oregon confused (in terms of standings, anyway) And I'd add that respect for losing to USC went right in to the shitter when they dropped one to Nevada and are now getting pole axed by La Tech.

alright, well then disregard my last post. :) I guess I got the wrong idea.

So it means something to them b/c they can use it as ammo to whine, but in reality it really doesn't mean anything b/c it won't help their cause?

Exactly. Oregon is on the bitch parade. This shellacking aint helping the whine machine's cause. I doubt seriously that a Fresno win would have put Oregon over the top where the BCS is concerned, but at least it would give them something to hang their hat on. Now if they pull the "We have a quality win over Fresno" bullshit the committees can essentially laugh in their faces. (assuming they wouldn't already)

Cal was #4 last year. #5 Texas leapfrogged them.

OSU is ranked higher, better SOS, better revenue/ratings.

The question is whether PSU will beat us to the Fiesta. oregon will not be involved. :)
