Game Thread Game Seven: Ohio State 48, Kent State 3 (final)

Game on in Toledo

Does anyone know if the Big Ten Network (or BCSN overflow) will carry the KSU v tOSU game on Sat in Toledo? BTN appears to be covering the Purdue v Michigan game. If not will it be on any network or will the radio be the only option?

We are too close to Ann Arbor.

BTN has been advertising that our game will be one of three noon games they carry. Since Purdue at Michigan is the main game (rightly so), ours will be on overflow...which in the case of DirecTV means non-HD (thus, I'm heading to the East Side Grill for the game).

Don't you guys think good ole conservative Tressel will only play Beanie against the likes of Kent State if he's confident that it won't affect things for the rest of the season??? It seems to me that if Beanie is playing this weekend, we can be sure of one of two things:

1. Beanie's ankle isn't as bad as we think.
2. His ankle isn't going to heal with a week or two rest. It's going to take extended off-season.

Either way, with the limited info we get on injuries now, how could we possibly second-guess Tressel with this one?

your exactly right. tressel has a history of resting guys when he can and when it will help. if a rest will help beanies ankle he certainly should get it. i have plenty of confidence in wells light and saine to carry the load in his absense.

beanie has more than enough reps both last year and this year. he also has solid backups. id like to see him dressed for the game. but unless we need him due to injuries, sit him, and let him heal. we shouldn't need beanie to beat kent state. but we will in the stretch of games we have coming up. we're going to need him 100% very shortly regardless of how "weak" the big 10 is perceived to be.

Upsets get Ohio State's attention

Staying focused is the key to not fumbling away games against opponents, Tressel says.

Tressel was asked during his weekly news conference if there is a common thread to the big upsets.
"Turnovers," he said. "That's just a guess. Wouldn't you say, Coach Bruce?"
Earle Bruce, the former Ohio State coach, was sitting among the reporters.
"I'd say that," Bruce said. "And then coaching."
That statement, as well as the pseudo-surprised look on Tressel's face, brought laughter to the room.
"Strike that from the record," Tressel joked.

Buckeyes have to be weary of trap
KSU could lure OSU into pitfall of being over confident

COLUMBUS (AP) -- The Big Ten race is just starting to get interesting -- and now No. 3 Ohio State has to take a break.
Kent State, fifth in its division of the Mid-American Conference, gets $650,000 to travel the 2 hours down Interstate 71 to come to Ohio Stadium on Saturday while the Buckeyes pass the time until a difficult stretch run in the Big Ten.
Meeting the Golden Flashes (3-3) might not have all the allure of playing Penn State or Michigan State, but coach Jim Tressel believes there are advantages to playing the game.
"What do they say, when you rest, you rust?" coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday.
The Buckeyes (6-0, 3-0) are unbeaten in the Big Ten, just like Illinois and Michigan. Indiana, Wisconsin and Purdue each have one loss. After the Kent State game, the Buckeyes have games against Michigan State, at Penn State, home with Wisconsin and Illinois, then close out the regular season at Michigan. The winning percentage of Ohio State's first seven opponents is just above .500. For those last five, it is .733. Itching to stay on a roll, the Buckeyes must downshift for a game that adds to the athletic department's bank account but does not do much for the team's momentum.

KSU playing better than record indicates
By JON SPENCER
For The Advocate

Kent State doesn't have to be Appalachian State or Stanford to stun the college football world with a win at Ohio State on Saturday.
Kent State just has to be Kent State.

If you recall, it was the Golden Flashes that got the ball rolling in this season of upheaval by shocking Iowa State 23-14 in Ames on the last Thursday in August.
It was Kent State's first victory over a Bowl Championship Series team since 1987 and came at the expense of a Big 12 team that would bump Iowa from the ranks of the unbeaten two weeks later. The 3-3 Flashes have won only twice since and enter Ohio Stadium feeling more than a little snakebitten. Upon closer inspection, they could be 5-1 with better luck and a better handle on the ball. They have committed 17 turnovers, more than all but seven of the 120 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision. They outgained both Akron and Miami, losing by a touchdown to both Mid-American Conference rivals because of seven giveaways. Their three turnovers against the RedHawks came deep in enemy territory.

The video is up on the OSU Web Site, but it's not free.

If you go to the press conference transcript site, there is a link in the top left of the article (the little TV icon with the 256 beside it).

Transcript From Coach Tressel Weekly Press Conference - Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

Click the 256 to open the "Buckeye Vision" browser. Ridiculous though ... it's like $10/month or $90/year.

Uh, Iowa State is 1-5 including a loss at home to I-AA Northern Iowa by almost the exact same score as their loss to Kent State. Losing to a team (Akron) that we totally dominated defensively doesn't bide to well for them either. As for "Kent State just has to be Kent State", that's precisely the problem..."being Kent State" this year means "turning the ball over". If they turn the ball over as much as they have been this season, the game will be over well before halftime...

I don't know how you can go about thinking this team could lose due to being overconfident or under-prepared when they got bitch-slapped on national television 9 months ago for exactly that reason. If you don't learn from that experience then maybe you deserve to not win.
