Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

I cannot wait for this game. All this talk about how Wolfe had a huge game last year against scUM and how he is going to do it against tOSU is rediculous. scUM's defense is horrible and Smith has shreaded it the past 2 years. When that "young, inexperienced" defense stomps on Wolfe the country is going to recognize that maybe this defense isnt as inexperienced as they think. All this talk about Wolfe reminds me of when we played Kansas State in the bowl game and they had Sproles. How did that turn out for him? I think OSU easily covers the spread even with the 2nd and 3rd teamers in at the end of the game.

We're better then Miami of Ohio and you are breaking in a new defense?

The guy basically said it would be around 40-0 with 10 minutes left in the 3rd.

That's not going to happen.

It was 34-0 in the third quarter last year with Zwick at QB (in fact our last TD was thrown in the third quarter by our third-stringer). On top of that, our offense is light years ahead what in was in last year's opener. Now, do I think we'll score 48 on you like he predicted? No. I think 38-41. But, if Tressel for some reason wanted to run up the score, there's no doubt in my mind we can push 50 on NIU...

My take on Saturday...

When Ohio State has the ball: The Bucks will obviously want to establish the run early, using a combination of Pittman and Wellsx2 in various formations. Don't be surprised to see Stan White or Dionte Johnson get a carry early on to remind NIU that we have very versatile fullbacks. The passing game will use a lot drag routes to utilize our speed on the corners and play action in generous amounts. NIU's defense will be forced to react to things quickly leaving thenm open to play action passes and option passes.

Troy Smith will get 5-7 carries in the first quarter on designed draws and QB keepers.

When NIU has the ball: The Huskies will try to use young defense's aggressiveness against them by running misdirection and counters to try to catch the linebackers out of position and isolate Wolfe on a safety. Once its a one on one, Wolfe can make him miss.

Horvath will start with some short, high percentage throws to adjust to the defense and try to set them up for the big play. A few jail break screens and crossing routes to get the offense in rythm.

Special Teams play will play a factor in this game. It will be either a big play by our kick returners or a mistake by them will either put the game away or give NIU a glimmer of hope late.

Score prediction:

NIU 17
tOSU: 38
