NIU hosting Iowa at Soldier Field

CHICAGO (AP) -- Northern Illinois will host Iowa next year in the first Division 1 football game at Soldier Field since its 2003 renovation, officials from both schools announced Monday.

The Sept. 1, 2007 game will be the first appearance for either school at Soldier Field, which has hosted football since 1926.

"For all Huskie fans, Hawkeye fans and college football fans in general, this is a win-win-win situation," Northern Illinois Director of Athletics Jim Phillips said in a joint statement with outgoing Iowa A.D. Bob Bowlsby.

"It's a great game, an even better venue and an attractive date for television," Phillips said.

Bowlsby added that Iowa is "very excited to be playing Northern Illinois in such a historic venue as Soldier Field."

The matchup is part of a home-and-home series between the programs. Iowa will host the Huskies on Oct. 28.

How is that a home-and-home? Iowa should play them on NIU's campus. Either that or don't act like you're really playing a home-and-home.

It was probably NIU's idea. They'll probably make more money by having the game in Chicago. There are more fans of both schools in Chicago than in DeKalb from what I've heard; though I wouldn't mind any NIU fans correcting me if I'm wrong.

At any rate, Soldier Field was twice the size of Huskie Stadium BEFORE the big renovation at Soldier Field. That is a LOT more tickets and a LOT more money.

I'm sure we would rather play at Huskie stadium though that does depend on how much money we would get playing at Soldier field. In any case, Iowa would never play us at home. And, like somebody mentioned above, it's silly to refer to it as a home and home, that does sound like NIU's marketing at work.

I don't know about that one. DeKalb's 1 hour and 15 minutes from Chicago. I'd imagine that NIU's student body would be much more of an impact on the game if it were on campus (particularly since a lot of the fans who will fill up Soldier Field will be Hawkeyes). Accordingly, if I played for NIU, I'd rather the game be on my own campus.

"Impact"??? Iowa plays in front of much, much larger hostile crowds every other week. There's no intimidation factor here...

One hour and 15 minutes is hardly far...Hell, that doesn't even qualify as "road trip"...

You wouldn't want to play on the same field that Butkus and Sayers and Singletary and Payton and countless others played on???? You're nuts!!...I understand the possibility that it will be 70%-30% to the Hawkeyes fans. Who cares??? But you can't honestly tell me that you would rather play in your own small campus stadium when...

1) Nobody is going to expect you to win anyway. Nothing to lose...Losing to Iowa wouldn't hurt NIU at all in their goals of winning a MAC title and getting a bowl game...Win-Win situation...
2) You have a chance to be in a pro locker room...Remember, most of these kids from both teams will be professionals in occupations other than football.
3) The stage is one of the most recognizable in all of football. Soldier field is one of those places that "Is Football"...
4) Playing in front of 90,000 people...This is a Bowl Game size atmosphere...
5) You are in Chicago, a world famous city where football rules all...And you're representing your home state...This is an upset waiting to happen, IMO...

Sorry, but you're nuts if you wouldn't be salivating over an opportunity to play at Soldier Field...Not to be heretical, but Soldier Field is just as much of a "Football Cathedral" as Ohio Stadium...I would kill to play on this field...(I'm not a Bears fan either , just so everybody knows)

Look at how UC played the Buckeyes (in our NC year!!) at Paul Brown Stadium in Cinci...You can not underestimate how these kids will get themselves pumped for a game like this...

I've never been to a game at Soldier Field but I have seen it before and after its renovation, the place looks incredible. It has a rich history, is an awesome facility, and smack dab in the middle of Chicago, which is a great city...I'd love to play there

It's an awesome place to play, and I can't wait to go to the game, but I personally would rather play them in Dekalb. I want to win, not play at a cool venue. Playing at Huskie Stadium increases our chances of victory.

Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for the game @ SF!

My point exactly. Sorry Saw, while I agree that Soldier Field would be a great place to play, as a member of the team, I'd be much more interested in winning. Therefore, I'd choose playing on campus.

And as I said, you're both nuts :wink:...Soldier Field will cause the kind of excitement that you aren't getting at Huskie Stadium...Did you not see my point when I mentioned UC playing way above themselves at Paul Brown Stadium??...Obviously you two are arguing that the familiarity of Huskie Stadium is the advantage NIU will have at home, but I say again, you WILL NOT intimidate an Iowa team that plays at tOSU, scUM, PSU, and Wisky on a regular basis...It's not gonna happen. They would look at it as a high school game in comparison to what they're used to seeing. Put them in a place like Soldier Field and let them feel some intimidation and some awe...I assume that Chicago will have plenty of NIU fans and the disparity of fans will be nowhere near what has been predicted, depending on how the tickets are distributed obviously. I may be wrong here and G-F can correct me if I am wrong, but I would find it hard to believe you couldn't get a hell of a lot of asses in the seats cheering for NIU for this game. (G-F, please tell me; If Huskie Stadium were bigger, could they sell the tickets for the NIU home games??? What's the atmosphere surrounding NIU's football program??? Could NIU sell 45-50,000 tickets for a game??? If the answer is yes, than my point is 100% valid and that puts you at a 50/50 fan split and more NIU fans than has ever attended an NIU regular season game. Hell, in my quick little research, Iowa's student enrollment is around 29,000 while NIU's is around 25,000...Not that much of a difference IMO. That would indictate to me that there are plenty of people out there connected to NIU and this would be an historic game for the University and the fans)...Anyway, as I've already said, if I'm the coach of NIU, I'm licking my chops at playing Iowa at Soldier Field, because this just reads like an upset in the making...I think you're both wrong...

That's my story and I'm sticking to it...And if NIU upsets Iowa in this game, I expect greenies from both of you...:biggrin:

Oh and BTW, from what I found, DeKalb is only 65 miles away from Chicago. That's not even a "I need to stop and piss" length drive...:biggrin:
